In the ongoing Zonal Round of RFDL, coach Deggie has deployed 24 players with 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. Sitting in the 3rd spot, Bagan is left behind by East Bengal and Diamond Harbour FC.
In 2024, after a 5-1 thrashing derby win under Bastab Roy in RFDL, the Mariners were confident in the youth setup of Mohun Bagan. However, the reality hits quite differently as we are handed back-to-back derby losses in RFDL this season. Ever since Deggie Cardozo took over the coaching role of MBSG Reserve Squad, he has managed to win only one trophy for the club apart from the UP CM Cup and Bhadreswar Gold Cup. In CFL 2024/25, Bagan couldn’t even qualify for the Super Six round, owing to a 3-2 derby loss. It would be surprising, and downright shocking, to know Deggie’s squad performance in derby games. Under his guidance, Bagan has managed to win a staggering low record of just 3 out of 12 derby matches while losing 6 of the fixtures!
Coming to the present, in the ongoing Zonal Round of RFDL, coach Deggie has
deployed 24 players with 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. Sitting in the 3rd
spot, Bagan is left behind by East Bengal and Diamond Harbour FC. It comes to
question how a well-developed squad that has won last year’s RFDL, with some
players even getting promoted and performing well in the Main Squad that won
both ISL Shield and ISL Cup last season, is performing way below its average
this season. After an infuriating 2-0 loss in the Regional Qualifiers against
10-man East Bengal FC despite having a quality striker like Suhail, Mariners
were of the idea that the coach would take his job seriously and prepare well ahead for the Zonal Group Stage derby. On the contrary, this time too, his
lack of concern and readable game tactics showed on the pitch. With fewer shots
on target and less overall ball possession, Mohun Bagan’s reserve squad suffered
another 1-0 defeat in the Junior Derby.
Reserve squad performance percolates to the Main Squad results. Last season, Mohun
Bagan won both ISL derbies in a convincing fashion. This season, Bagan started
off with a loss in the Durand Cup, won 1 derby final in the IFA Shield and drew the
match in the Super Cup. Performance below expectations in the Champion’s club
resulted in the farewell of coach Molina.
However, despite this abysmal performance in derby games, Deggie Cardozo shows
no signs of remorse nor an instinct to regain Bagan’s lost vigour. It is
humiliating to watch the rivals row boats as a mockery celebration on the
pitch. The fans are not amused by his antics at all, and he must choose to
rectify his mistakes at once or face the boot from the National Club of India.
