The quest for the elusive treble ends for the Mariners as they Kalinga Super Cup ends with a heart-breaking 3-1 loss to ISL shield runner ups F.C. Goa on Wednesday, 30th April at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. Our junior team fought hard against the Gaurs but succumbed to their experience.

The two teams began the match with full pedal on the gas as they both were searching for an early opener. Jay Gupta made a surging run early on but his shot was way off target. This pressure finally became fruitful as the Gaurs got the lead in the 20th minute thanks to Brison. But the celebrations didn’t last long as Bagan equalized just 3 mins later with a wonderful combined play between Ashique and Suhail. Ashique rapped the ball inside the box from the left flank and Suhail made no mistake in putting it past Hrithik. The 1st  half ended all square between the two teams.

The 2nd half began with the Gaurs upping the ante once again. Ex-Mariner Carl McHugh’s shot just missed the net. The Goans knew pretty well about the inexperience of the Bagan squad and took full advantage of it. Despite the pressure, the double ISL Champs got a great opportunity in the 47th min but Sahal failed to convert it.

Around the 50th minute, Drazic steamed through the defense from the left flank. In a desperate attempt to not concede, Dheeraj came up from his line but missed the tackle and conceded a penalty. And Guarrotxena had no problem in burying it. It was 2-1 Goa.

The final nail in the coffin came in the 58th minute when Borja scored an Olimpico from the corner, thus breaking the hearts of millions and delaying the treble winning season.

The match was very competitive game wise. The score line doesn’t reflect the whole story of the match as some of our goals were conceded from individual errors. The decision to field the 2nd team in a Super Cup despite having a great shot at the treble is a very bold step an a very good one as well.

This tournament gave our young players the much necessary exposure to good quality sides and gave much needed rest to our senior squad members. This tournament also gave much needed gametime to our bench warmers as well as players who were out for most of the season due to injury concerns. The Mariner faithful should be very proud of the performance they delivered. The treble still eludes us, but if we continue to provide performances like this season, that treble will come very soon.

On the other hand, Goa will face off against Khalid Jamil’s Jamshedpur on Saturday,3rd May for the Final. The match is expected to be a thriller as both the trophy and an Asian spot are up for grabs.
