Doing ISL Double ?? Easy task for Molina's Mohun Bagan.
The football season of 2024-25 started in August with Durand
Cup, where Mohun Bagan went all the way to the final but was stopped by North
East United FC in the end. With a habit of bringing trophies home, a setback at
the start made the fans anxious about the upcoming season. They wanted the team
to redeem its glorious status and show the world who is ‘The King of the
Jungle’. Then, as we all know, ISL Season 2024-25 started.
And the rest was history.
Let’s relive this historic journey from the beginning.
As usual, the fans expect the team to win all the trophies
where they participated in, as the saying goes "Mohun Bagan steps on the field
to win.” This path was cut short in the middle of the season when Mohun Bagan
was considered withdrawn from Asian Champions League 2 (ACL 2) by the Asian
Football Federation(AFC) after the team refused to travel to Iran due to
ongoing political unrest. While the whole country stood in support of the team’s
decision, AFC’s decision couldn’t be reverted according to the rulebook that left
no scope for any exceptions.
As a result, the fans wanted Mohun Bagan to defend ISL
Shield with utmost effort in 2024-25 season and secure AFC Asian Champions League
2 (ACL 2) slot for another opportunity to represent the country internationally
in the upcoming year.

-: Squad Analysis : -
With plenty of new signings, squad changes and a new head coach
in-command including a whole coaching staff introduction, everyone was on their
toes to see how Mohun Bagan performs in this ISL season. The new coach had
previous ISL experience which was a plus in our books. He started off strong
with new tactics, even though all weren’t successful, it was a fresh breeze for
football lovers. Molina’s experimental system of 3 backs didn’t quite work out
well in Durand Cup, so he reverted to his preferred formation of 4-2-3-1 for
the rest of ISL.
The perfect net protectors were previous ISL Golden Glove winner
Vishal Kaith as first choice and new signing experienced goalkeeper Dheeraj
Singh as backup and Arsh in the reserves.
The defensive wall was led by left back Captain Subhasish Bose,
along with new foreign signings Alberto and Tom at Centre Back roles and Asish
Rai on the right back. With Anwar Ali leaving the club abruptly without a just
cause, the Mariners had to put their hopes on the prodigy, Dippendu Biswas, to
turn up for the National Club of India from the subs.
However, fans were skeptical as to how the team would perform
without a foreign CDM, but a big signing was completed to fill the void -
Lalengmawia Ralte aka Amader Apuia joined the ranks after beating Emami
East Bengal FC to the race.
National team players Anirudh Thapa, Deepak Tangri and Sahal Abdul
Samad were all available to play in the midfield for the Green and Maroon.
Abhishek Suryavanshi provided support from the bench as a substitute.
The lungs of the team Manvir Singh and Liston Colaco were natural
choices for the wing positions, with Ashique Kuruniyan as a backup, who recovered
successfully from an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear injury and rejoined
the squad after almost a year. After all, who doesn’t love a good comeback
story…
As for the foreigners in the attacking half, fans loved to see Greg Stewart in our favourite colours play alongside Jason and Dimitrios Petratos in the attacking midfield, bringing back memories of his previous ISL-winning performances. The new A-league top scorer, Jamie Maclaren or Macca, was surely an upgrade from Armando Sadiku in the previous season, the new commander in the box to lead us to a record-breaking season.

-:How The Season Unfolded:-
The first game of ISL was held on 13th September, 2024, at the home stadium, VYBK, where Mohun Bagan locked horns with Mumbai City FC which ended in a 2-2 draw. While it was not a perfect start, the next match saw a 3-2 final scoreline, a befitting revenge against the Highlanders after the Durand Cup Final upset.
For the next game, the team travelled for the first away game of the season to play against Bengaluru FC and had their first loss of their season. Critics were skeptical of Molina’s tactics and the fans were anxious as the derby matches were coming up ahead. The bounce-back took no time at all. After the international break, Mohun Bagan faced Mohammedan SC in the Kolkata min-derby. Mohun Bagan’s relentless fighting mentality and hard work both on and off the pitch showed on that day as the Mariners splashed their colours over the monochrome with a 3-0 thumping win at home. Up next was the “BORO MATCH” aka the biggest Asian Derby clash – Mohun Bagan vs Emami East Bengal FC. The stadium was half filled in Green and Maroon and the rest in Red and Yellow. The first bullet was shot by Jamie who ran past Hector and Anwar, as he watched the Aussie slide Manvir’s cross through the near post. The final nail was put in by none other than their nightmare-Dimi who secured a penalty and then converted it. With a 2-0 convincing win, Mohun Bagan proved to be the stronger side again. The next opponent Hyderabad FC was quickly taken down in a 2-0 fashion. But the Mariners faced tough opposition in Odisha FC away match which resulted in a 1-1 draw.
The team, with their eyes on the ISL Shield,
bounced back to defeat Jamshedpur FC 3-0 at home. Chennaiyan FC stood next in
the way, who held their ground till 86 minutes, but the Joker, Jason Cummings,
came as a golden substitute to score an outstanding goal which resulted in 3
points in our favour. Keeping the winning streak up was not easy, but the
Mariners were on a roll. They took down NorthEast United FC 2-0 in away format
and an injury time goal from Alberto gave the final score line of 3-2 vs Kerala
Blasters at VYBK. However, they soon met their match with the 2nd
position team on the table, FC Goa, who won by 2-1 in Fatorda Stadium, Goa. Despite
the upset, this was just the 2nd loss of the season and the Green
and Maroon squad was still confident to defend the ISL Shield this season. In
the next two matches, Mohun Bagan defeated Punjab FC and Hyderabad FC 3-1 and
3-0 respectively.
The first half of ISL was over after the Punjab FC match and
Mohun Bagan was convincingly on top of the table with 9 victories and 2 losses
in the opening 13 matches and a 5-point lead over second-placed Bengaluru FC.
After the Hyderabad FC match, Mohun Bagan faced arch rivals
Emami East Bengal FC on 11th
January, 2025, at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Guwahati. In this 2nd
BORO MATCH, Jamie Maclaren scored the only goal of the match in the opening 98
seconds – fastest in ISL Derby history and thus, securing bragging rights for
the fans. Next two matches were away fixtures against Jamshedpur FC and
Chennaiyan FC, who were able to hold off the Mariners and share points with 1-1
and 0-0 final scorelines respectively. However, the team didn’t take much time
to bounce back to winning days by defeating Bengaluru FC at home with Liston’s
Golazo, a revenge dish best served hot. Mohun Bagan faced Mohammedan SC next in
the Kolkata mini-derby, who succumbed to a 4-0 humiliating defeat with a brace
from captain Subhasish Bose and Manvir Singh. The next in line were Punjab FC
and Kerala Blasters, both defeated 3-0 with Maclaren scoring braces in both
games.
This was the last week of February and up next was Odisha FC
at home. Winning this game would officially make them Champions of India. As
this match was on high stakes, the stadium was filled with supporters who
turned up in big numbers. The match went back and forth but the scoreline
stayed the same. Finally it was time for a legend to step up and change the
course of history. It was the 92nd minute, and Dimitrios Petratos
took a shot from the edge of the box. The fans held their breath as the ball
rolled by the 2nd post into the back of the net. The stadium erupted
in joy, filled with ecstasy. The final whistle blew minutes after, letting the
world know that Mohun Bagan was the Champions of India.
In the next two matches, Mohun Bagan faced Mumbai City FC
which resulted in a 2-2 draw and FC Goa at home, where the Mariners had the
last laugh by securing a 2-0 victory.
After lifting the ISL Shield, the job was only half done.
The next goal was the ISL Cup and the Mariners wanted all the trophies for
their cabinet. They matched up with Jamshedpur FC in ISL Cup Semifinal. In the
away fixture, Mohun Bagan lost 2-1 and Jamshedpur FC got the lead in the 1st
leg. However, the Red Miners collapsed in the 2nd leg in VYBK where
Mohun Bagan emerged victorious with 2-0 win and an aggregate score of 3-2,
which brought them to ISL Final.
On the other hand, Bengaluru FC managed to defeat FC Goa and
reach the final. The Green and Maroon came face to face with their final
opponents that stood in the way of lifting the ISL Cup. Being the higher ranked
team in the league, the match took place at VYBK. With the support of 60,000
fans at the stadium and prayers of millions worldwide, Mohun Bagan hoped to
break the curse and win the elusive ISL Cup at home. The first half went nil as
Bagan struggled to find the back of the net with only 36% ball possession.
Eventually, the curse had its effect at 49 minutes as the Mariners conceded the
first goal as Ryan’s cross was deflected by Alberto into our own net. After
trailing by one goal, the chants and prayers only got louder. The team rose up
to the occasion and attacked fiercely. Timely substitutions from the coach
changed the course of the game as crosses and dribbles rained by Ashique and
Sahal led to Jamie’s shot at goal was blocked by hand by BFC’s defender
Chinglensana, which awarded the home team with a penalty. Jason Cummings calmly
slotted it home from the spot to make the match even at 72 minutes. The match
was a draw during normal time so the match went to extra time. This was when
another substitute, Greg Stewart, who previously gave the ISL Shield winning
assist to Dimi, passed the ball into the box and Jamie collected it from a
fumble, dribbled past and shot it through Gurpreet’s legs. The A-league all
time high scorer scored the winning goal and as the final whistle blew, the fans’
joys knew no bounds. A 2-1 final scoreline as the Mariners lift the ISL Cup.
Both the domestic double, the ISL Shield and ISL Cup, was won in a
record-breaking fashion. This is how Mohun Bagan proved that they are the “King
of the Jungle”.
Special Matches and Moments: -
Let’s go over some of the special matches that Mohun Bagan
turned around and dominated this season. These are the ones to remember over
the ages.
ISL League Special Matches and Moments
Mohun Bagan SG 3 - 2 NorthEast United FC (23rd September, 2024)
This match was a befitting reply to the Highlanders after the Durand Cup Final loss. Being the 2nd match of ISL season and the first win, it was the start to remember. After trailing by a goal, our prodigy defender, Dippendu scored his debut goal to make it even. Then, the Golden Ball and Boot winner Alaaeddine Ajaraie got them the lead, which got nullified by Subhasish Bose in the 2nd half. The final nail in the coffin was from none other than Jason Cummings who secured the first 3 points on the table for us. The team fought till the end and the result showed.
Emami East Bengal FC 0 - 2 Mohun Bagan SG (19th
October, 2024)
Derby
matches are always special, no matter how weak the opponent is. Mohun Bagan
were the clear favourites in the match-up in this away fixture and it showed.
This derby was special as Mohun Bagan played to prove a point – No player is
bigger than the club. Hence, every touch of Anwar Ali in the rival jersey was
met with boos from the Mariners. The supporters cheered their heart out when
Jamie Maclaren scored the first goal. The one goal lead continued till the 89th
minute when their nemesis, Dimi, was tackled in the box by the goalkeeper Gill,
and the penalty was converted to win the game in a dominating fashion. As truly
said by Captain Subhasish Bose, “Kolkata was forever Green and Maroon…in the
past, the present, and the future.”
Mohun Bagan SG 3 - 2 Kerala Blasters FC (14th
December, 2024)
This
game is what you call a nail-biter. Maclaren got the lead in the first half but
the game overturned as KBFC scored twice in a row. But the game was far from
over. It is never over till it’s really over. The golden sub, Jason Cummings,
scored in the 86th minute to make the match level. Mohun Bagan kept
the pressure up with the 12th man support at VYBK, which led to the
legendary volley in the 90+5’ from Alberto Rodriguez from far far away, which
cruised like a rocket into the back of the net. What a match it was, and what a
goal to seal the deal. A hard-fought win for the Mariners.
Mohun Bagan SG 1 - 0 Emami East Bengal FC (11th
January, 2025)
Due to
ongoing Gangasagar Mela leading to lack of security, Mohun Bagan shifted their
home derby game to Indira Gandhi Stadium in Guwahati. But even with supporters
in small numbers, the team started strong with Jamie Maclaren, once again,
scoring the first goal and this time, in 98 seconds- the fastest in ISL Derby
History. Kolkata remains Green and Maroon and EEBFC will have to try in the
next season to break Mohun Bagan’s unbeaten Derby run in ISL history. Till
then, the bragging rights is ours.
Mohammedan SC 0 - 4 Mohun Bagan SG (1st February, 2025)
After a 3-0 thrashing
win against the newly-promoted I-league side in the home game, Mohun Bagan were
the clear favourites in the Mini-Derby. They doubled down on it with braces
from Subhasish Bose and Manvir Singh against a 10-man MSC to end the match with
the biggest margin win this ISL.
Mohun Bagan SG 1 - 0 Odisha FC (23rd February, 2025)
This day is for the
history books. Mohun Bagan was playing their home match at full capacity VYBK
against Odisha FC and a win would officially make them Champions of India.
Mohun Bagan was aggressive from the start but Odisha FC defended well. With a
couple of substitutions and Odisha FC going down to 10-men, it looked promising
but all we could do is hope. Added time was given 9 minutes but we didn’t need
that long. The man of the hour, the legend, Dimitri Petratos, turned up when
the team needed him the most. He scored a banger from the edge of the box and
the hourglass cracked at 92:49 for all Mariners worldwide. At his historic
moment, the winning goal made us Champions of India. Mohun Bagan successfully
defended the ISL Shield – a feat that has never been achieved before. On 23rd
February, 2025, Mohun Bagan won the ISL Shield and lifted it 2 matches later in
front of home fans on 8th March, 2025.
ISL Playoffs Special Matches and Moments
Mohun Bagan SG 2 – 0 Jamshedpur FC (7th April,
2025) – ISL Cup Semifinal 2nd Leg
This
match was special on so many levels. In the first leg of the ISL Cup Semifinal,
while Mohun Bagan lost the match 2-1, we witnessed the unfortunate incident of
some Mariner fans and supporters being physically beaten up by the security
personnel. This made the home match a need for a crucial win for two reasons –
first being the ticket to the ISL Cup Final and second, more importantly, was
doing it for the fans. As Jamshedpur FC missed key players, they defended from
the start against the overly-aggressive Mohun Bagan. With 74% possession, it
was only in the second half that Jason Cummings scored a goal to level the
aggregate score to 2-2. The high humidity was taking a toll on the players but
it only made them push themselves harder to fight for the fans. In the final
minutes of the game, at 90+4’ Apuia scored a top corner goal from the edge of
the box, a debut goal to remember from our new signing that took us to the ISL
Cup final.
Mohun Bagan SG 2 – 1 Bengaluru FC (12th April, 2025) – ISL Cup Final
Another shot at the
elusive ISL Cup. The chance to achieve the domestic double for the cabinet was
too good to let go. The team took on Bengaluru FC at VYBK with a hope to win
the ISL Cup at home for the first time in ISL history. The first half was a struggle
with Bengaluru FC gaining possession and dominating the game. It showed in the
scoreline in the 2nd half as Ryan’s cross at 49th minute
went into the net due to a deflection from Alberto. Trailing by a goal, the
head coach, Jose Molina, needed to make some crucial substitutions to change
the course of the game. He brought on the magical duo- Ashique and Sahal, who
did exactly that. Their defence life break-ins, shots on goal, dribbling past
the players made the opponents lose their balance. The VYBK’s roar made them
tremble and soon, one of the crosses found Jamie in the 70th minute,
whose shot on goal was blocked by hand, thus, awarding a penalty to Mohun
Bagan. Jason Cummings scored in aram-se attitude and the match was level. The
full 90 minutes was over and the score stayed 1-1 which meant extra time.
Jamie’s constant threat proved fatal once again as in the 96th
minute Greg’s pass was fumbled by BFC’s defence and just like the fox in the
box he is known to be, Jamie pounced on that opportunity and scored the
match-winning goal through Gurpreet’s legs. On this day, 12th April,
2025, Mohun Bagan won the ISL Cup by defeating Bengaluru FC 2-1 and lifted the
trophy in front of the home fans.
