Its redemption time for Mohun Bagan as the mariners clinch a close 1-0 victory over Bengaluru F.C. in the battle of heavyweights on Monday 27th January at the Vivekananda Yuvabharati Krirangan and complete their revenge over the West Block Blues who had humbled us 3-0 at the Kanteerava in the reverse fixture in September.

The title race was getting interesting as the defending champions had drawn in two consecutive matches and FC Goa were breathing down their neck in the points table. Bengaluru on the other hand were having a very bad patch of form and once the shield favourites were now on a struggle to even stay in the top 6.So,this match was of great significance for both the stalwarts of Indian Football.

Bengaluru F.C lineup : Gurpreet(Gk), Roshan, Sana, Bheke, Nikhil, Noguera, Pedro Capo, Suresh, Ryan Williams, Edgar Mendez, Chhetri(c).

Subs: Fanai, Sivasakthi, Vinith, Mawia(Gk), Bhutia, Salah, Halicharan, Palande, Rohit, Danu

Mohun Bagan lineup : Vishal(Gk), Aldred, Alberto, Subhashis(c), Dippendu, Stewart, Deepak, Apuia, Manvir, Liston, Maclaren.

Subs: Dheeraj(Gk), Arsh(Gk), Petratos, Abhishek, Sahal, Ashique, Cummings, Bhanwala, Suhail.

Bengaluru started the proceedings and started piling on the pressure from the very beginning of the match. The West Block Blues were playing with an all Indian defense which allowed them to utilize all their foreigners in attack and midfield. Noguera, Edgar and Capo were creating all sorts of problems for Bagan. Apuia picked up a yellow card for a challenge just in the 8th minute of the 1st half which further increased the pressure on the mariners midfield.

And with the likes of Suresh, Roshan with Chhetri lurking in the middle, the crosses and cutbacks became even more scarier to defend. The first 20 minutes was all Bengaluru. Mohun Bagan slowly started to get into their rhythm as the half progressed with some good runs from Manvir and Liston. Maclaren got a chance to score in the 26th minute but his shot was blocked by Noguera.

Stewart also had a golden chance in the 36th minute but his hand touched the ball while controlling, thus to no avail.Liston tried to score his trademark Golazo goal but his shot was punched out by Gurpreet.

But the best chance of the half came to our Captain, Leader, Legend and former Mohun Bagani(still a Ghorer Chele)Sunil Chhetri who failed to convert an excellent pass from Noguera. Credit also goes to our Vishal Kaith who greatly closed down the angle for Chhetri.

Thus a goalless half came to an end.

The second half began with the mariners pushing hard for a goal. And in almost no time they got a great chance with Stewart extending an excellent ball to Manvir who passed it to Macca who would have surely scored if not for a wonderful interception from Bheke. Bagan found another great opportunity from a corner but Aldred’s header was put away for another corner.

There were a few minute chances for both the teams but none were materialised, with the most prominent one being in the 61st minute with Gurpreet’s fumble. But decisive moment came 13 minutes later when Colaco finally scored his signature Golazo and it literally flew past Gurpreet into the back of the net.

The scene was as beautiful as a sunrise view of Kanchenjunga from Darjeeling. It was truly a belter. The whole Saltlake screamed and jumped in jubilation. Bengaluru tried their best to equalise with the likes of Chhetri, Ryan Williams giving their all but a solid defensive performance from the Mariners kept them at bay.

The match thus ended with the 1-0 scoreline. It was a very crucial win for Bagan on the backdrop of two consecutive draws in terms of the title race. Though they were sloppy in their own half at the beginning, they gradually got better and got the job done.

The Mariners are currently leading the table with 40 points from 18 matches. Their main challengers Goa are not far behind with 33 points from 17 Bengaluru on the other hand are not in a position they would have liked as the once title favourites are on 28 points from 18 matches. At this point, a top 6 finish seems difficult for the Blues.

The Champions will play their next match against Mohammedan on Saturday, 1st of February. And as the league stages comes to its business end, each match becomes like a knockout.
