Panagiotis Dilmperis, popularly known as Panos, has been appointed as the new head coach of Mohun Bagan Super Giant on a one-year contract. The Greek tactician arrives after an impressive stint with Punjab FC, whom he joined last season following coaching assignments with several clubs in Greece’s first division. During his tenure, he delighted supporters by instilling an attractive and dynamic brand of football. His tactical acumen quickly turned heads in the Indian Super League, particularly due to his success in forging a highly competitive unit from a comparatively modest squad of new foreign recruits and emerging youth players.
Rooted in an attacking yet balanced footballing philosophy, the 51-year-old’s greatest asset is his proven ability to build seamless chemistry between seasoned veterans and young talents. This expertise in squad harmony and development ultimately convinced the Mohun Bagan Super Giant management to hand him the responsibility of managing the team for the upcoming season.
After signing the contract, Panagiotis Dilmperis shared his views with MBSG Media, discussing his footballing philosophy, coaching approach and expectations from Mohun Bagan's star-studded squad. Here is what he had to say...
Q: Why did you choose to coach the Mohun Bagan Super Giant squad?
A: Mohun Bagan is much more than a football club — it is an institution with a remarkable history, a winning culture and one of the most passionate fanbases in Asia.
Q: Are you satisfied with the squad selection so far for this season?
A: Yes, I believe we have a strong and talented squad with a good balance of experience and quality. Of course, every coach always looks for ways to improve, but my focus is on maximizing the potential of the players we have. Success comes not only from individual talent but from creating a united team with the right mentality, discipline and commitment.
Q: MBSG has a huge fan base with high expectations. How do you plan to manage the pressure of their expectations?
A: There is a saying - “Pressure is a privilege”. At big clubs, expectations are always high and that is exactly how it should be. The passion of Mohun Bagan supporters is one of the club’s greatest strengths. Our responsibility is to earn their trust every day through hard work, professionalism and performances that reflect the values of this great club. We cannot promise victories every week, but we can promise a team that competes with courage, discipline and the desire to win every match.
Q: In your coaching career have you managed a club with a fanbase as passionate as the MBSG fanbase?
A: I have been fortunate to work at clubs with demanding supporters who expected success, but Mohun Bagan is unique. Even before arriving, I understood the emotional connection between the club and its fans. You can feel that this is more than football — it is identity, pride and tradition, that makes this challenge very special and I am excited to experience that atmosphere firsthand.
Q: You might have to play the Kolkata Derby within a few weeks of taking charge. What is your idea about the Kolkata Derby?
A: Football is built on great rivalries and the Kolkata Derby is one of the biggest and the most historic in world football. I know what it means to the supporters, to the players and to everyone connected with the club. The best way to prepare for such a match is not with emotions alone, but with excellent preparation, discipline and confidence. We will respect our opponents, but we will also play with courage and with the ambition expected from Mohun Bagan.
Q: What will be your main target with the MBSG team that has a record of being champions consistently?
A: When you coach Mohun Bagan, the objective is always to compete for every trophy. We respect what has already been achieved because winning consecutive championships is never easy. Now our responsibility is to maintain those standards and continue building a team that plays attractive, disciplined and winning football. Every season is a new challenge and we start with humility, hard work and the ambition to bring more success to the club.
Q: What will be your message for the MBSG fans?
A: To all the Mohun Bagan supporters, I know how much this club means to you and I understand the responsibility that comes with wearing these colours. Together with management, my staff and the players, we will work every single day to make you proud. We will need your energy because football is always stronger when the team and its supporters move as one.

প্রশ্ন- যে দল নিয়ে কোচিং করাতে নামবেন, সেই দল নিয়ে কী আপনি সন্তুষ্ট?
উত্তর- হ্যাঁ, আমি বিশ্বাস করি একটি শক্তিশালী এবং প্রতিভাবান দল হাতে পাচ্ছি, যেখানে অভিজ্ঞতা ও দক্ষতার একটি চমৎকার ভারসাম্য আছে। প্রত্যেক কোচই সবসময় উন্নতির নতুন পথ খোঁজেন, তবে আমার মূল লক্ষ্য থাকবে, আমি যে দলকে কোচিং করাব তাদের সবাইকে সক্ষমতার শীর্ষে নিয়ে গিয়ে সর্বোচ্চভাবে ব্যবহার করতে। সাফল্য কখনও একক ব্যক্তিগত প্রতিভা থেকে আসে না, বরং সঠিক মানসিকতা, শৃঙ্খলা এবং দায়বদ্ধতার মাধ্যমে একটি ঐক্যবদ্ধ দল গড়ে তোলার মধ্য দিয়ে আসে।
প্রশ্ন- মোহনবাগানের কোটি কোটি সমর্থক রয়েছেন বিশ্বজুড়ে, যাদের প্রত্যাশাও প্রচুর। আপনি তাদের এই বিশাল প্রত্যাশার চাপ কীভাবে সামলানোর পরিকল্পনা করছেন?
উত্তর- একটি কথা আছে, Pressure is a privilege। বিশ্বের সব বড় ক্লাবগুলোতেই প্রত্যাশা সবসময়ই আকাশচুম্বী থাকে এবং সেটাই স্বাভাবিক। মোহনবাগান সমর্থকদের এই আবেগই ক্লাবের অন্যতম প্রধান শক্তি। আমাদের দায়িত্ব হলো কঠোর পরিশ্রম, পেশাদারিত্ব এবং এই মহান ক্লাবের মর্যাদার সাথে সামঞ্জস্যপূর্ণ পারফরম্যান্সের মাধ্যমে প্রতিদিন তাদের বিশ্বাস অর্জন করা। আমরা হয়তো প্রতি সপ্তাহে জয়ের প্রতিশ্রুতি দিতে পারব না, কিন্তু আমরা এমন একটি দল হয়ে উঠতে চাইব যারা সাহসিকতা, শৃঙ্খলা এবং প্রতিটি ম্যাচ জেতার তীব্র আকাঙ্ক্ষা নিয়ে মাঠে নামবে, লড়াই করবে।
প্রশ্ন- আপনার কোচিং জীবনে আপনি কি এমন কোনো ক্লাবের দায়িত্ব সামলেছেন যাদের সমর্থকরা মোহনবাগান সদস্য সমর্থকদের মতো এতটা আবেগপ্রবণ?
উত্তর- আমি সৌভাগ্যবান যে এর আগে এমন কিছু ক্লাবে কাজ করেছি যেখানে সমর্থকরা সাফল্য ছাড়া কিছু বুঝতেন না, তবে মোহনবাগান অনন্য। এখানে আসার আগেই আমি ক্লাব এবং তাদের সমর্থকদের মধ্যকার আবেগঘন সম্পর্কের কথা বুঝতে পেরেছিলাম। মোহনবাগান ক্লাবের পরস্পরা কেবল ফুটবলের মধ্যেই সীমাবদ্ধ নয়—এটি আত্মপরিচয়, গর্ব এবং ঐতিহ্যের এক মেলবন্ধন। আমি এখানে কোচিং করতে নামব সেই চ্যালেঞ্জকে সঙ্গে নিয়েই। আমি মাঠের সেই বিশেষ আবেগের বিস্ফোরিত পরিবেশ অনুভব করার জন্য মুখিয়ে আছি।
প্রশ্ন- দায়িত্ব নেওয়ার কয়েক সপ্তাহের মধ্যেই আপনাকে কলকাতা ডার্বিতে নামতে হবে। কলকাতা ডার্বি সম্পর্কে আপনার ধারণা কী?
উত্তর- ফুটবল দাঁড়িয়েই আছে চিরপ্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতার ওপর। আর ভারতে আসার পরই জেনে গিয়েছি কলকাতা ডার্বি বিশ্ব ফুটবলের অন্যতম বৃহত্তম এবং সবচেয়ে ঐতিহাসিক ম্যাচগুলোর একটি। সমর্থক, খেলোয়াড় এবং ক্লাবের সাথে যুক্ত প্রত্যেকের কাছে এর গুরুত্ব কতটা, তা আমি জানি। এই ধরনের ম্যাচের জন্য নিজেকে প্রস্তুত করার সেরা উপায় কেবল আবেগ নয়, বরং চমৎকার প্রস্তুতি, শৃঙ্খলা এবং আত্মবিশ্বাস নিয়ে মাঠে নামা। আমরা প্রতিপক্ষকে সম্মান করব, তবে একই সঙ্গে মোহনবাগানের ঐতিহ্যের সাথে মানানসই সাহসিকতা নিয়ে এই ডার্বি জিততেও চাইব।
প্রশ্ন- ভারতীয় ফুটবলে মোহনবাগান সুপার জায়ান্ট ধারাবাহিক সাফল্যের রাস্তায় আছে। এই অবস্থায় দল নিয়ে আপনার মূল লক্ষ্য কী হবে?
উত্তর- আপনি যখন মোহনবাগানের মত হাই প্রোফাইল ক্লাবের কোচিং করাবেন, তখন লক্ষ্য থাকতে হবে সবসময় প্রতিটি ট্রফির জন্য লড়াই করা। অতীতে যা অর্জিত হয়েছে তাকে আমরা সম্মান করি, কারণ টানা চ্যাম্পিয়ন হওয়া কখনোই সহজ কাজ নয়। এখন আমাদের দায়িত্ব হলো সেই ধারাবাহিকতা বজায় রাখা। এমন একটি দল গঠন করে এবং প্রস্তুতি নিয়ে মাঠে নামতে হবে যা হবে আকর্ষণীয় এবং শৃঙ্খলাপরায়ণ। যা জয়ের রাস্তা খুলে দেবে। প্রতিটি মরশুমই নতুন চ্যালেঞ্জ সামনে আনে। কঠোর পরিশ্রম এবং ক্লাবের জন্য আরও সাফল্য বয়ে আনার মানসিকতা নিয়ে মাঠে নামব আমরা।
প্রশ্ন- মাঠে নামার আগে সবুজ মেরুন সমর্থকদের জন্য কী বার্তা দিতে চান?
উত্তর- সমস্ত মোহনবাগান সমর্থকদের উদ্দেশ্যে বলতে চাই, এই ক্লাব আপনাদের কাছে কতটা আবেগের জায়গা তা আমি জানি। এই ক্লাবের জার্সি গায়ে জড়ানোর পর দায়িত্ব কতটা বেড়ে যায়, তাও আমি বুঝি। ক্লাব ম্যানেজমেন্ট, আমার কোচিং স্টাফ এবং খেলোয়াড়দের সঙ্গে নিয়ে আমরা প্রতিদিন কঠোর পরিশ্রম করব যাতে সবুজ মেরুন সমর্থকরা গর্বিত হতে পারেন। আমাদের আপনাদের সমর্থনের শক্তি প্রয়োজন, কারণ দল এবং সমর্থকরা যখন এক হয়ে এগিয়ে চলে, তখনই ফুটবল সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী হয়ে ওঠে। ট্রফি জয়ের জন্য যা দরকার।
