A 4-goal triumph as CFL returns back to Mohun Bagan ground!

Mohun Bagan made a couple of great additions in the squad for CFL 2026/27. After a disappointing last season, the previous coach, Deggie Cardozo, was replaced by Bastab Roy, who spoke in detail about the process and aim of the team in the tournament in the pre-match press conference - "The squad is good on paper, but we'll have to see how they perform on the field. Our opponents practice all throughout the year, and the first match is never easy."

He continued," This time the rules of CFL has changed. As points and goal statistics will not get forwarded to the next round, our first aim to finish in top 6 and qualify for the next round."

He added," The aim of playing CFL is to supply the main team with quality players. Some of the senior team players have joined the squad to get playing minutes on the pitch, which they lacked in the previous season. "

Post pre-match press conference on Sunday, Mohun Bagan held a closed door practice session that involved quick passing practice in small areas and crosses and finishes in the box.

This is how Mohun Bagan lined up against Mamoni Group Patha Chakra on Monday:


Robilal Mandi, the newest addition from DHFC, made his debut in Green-and-Maroon colours along with Sayan Banerjee, who chose to represent a greater legacy this season. In the rain-soaked weather, the match kicked off at the Mohun Bagan ground. The supporters thronged the stands, showing their support through cheers, tifos and colours in the first match of CFL.

In the first half, Umer played an amazing ball down the left wing, over the heads of the entire opponent team, but the keeper rushed out. Sayan tried to push the ball in-between his legs, but the angle was well-covered. A while later, Zahid made a blunder pass to Souvik. Umer tried to block it but Souvik dribbled back-and-forth to throw him off the stance and took the final shot at goal. Zahid made the required save and redeemed himself. Mohun Bagan kept possession and continuously made runs in the attacking third while keeping control of the ball in the midfield. Suhail made a darting run to a through pass but the keeper, Arnab, came out to slide and clear the ball. Minutes later, Sayan accelerated down the left wing, and sent in a curling pass across 3 opponent players to find Suhail on the other end, but alas, the striker couldn't reach it in time. Mohun Bagan desperately wanted to break the deadlock as the cheers of the stands fueled their hunger even more! Captain Kiyan led the charge on the right wing and put in a decent cross, but it was cleared before Sayan could get a proper touch on it.

Robilal, who was exceptional on his debut, played a world-class pass that went across the defenders to find Kiyan in the box, but the captain missed a sitter while all eyes watched the ball unfortunately go off-target.

Not long after, the aggression paid off as Sayan broke through with incredible pace down the left wing, getting past two and penetrating deep into the box. He finally slid in the ball across the keeper for the easiest tap-in goal right in front of the face of the goal, and Kiyan happily obliged. The midfield playmaker, Rohit, set up Suhail inside the box later on, but the final shot was weak. Sayan curled one towards the second post top corner, but Arnab lept high in the air and made an excellent save. Minutes later, on a counter attack, Sayan put in a wonderful cross towards Suhail but the striker couldn't connect the header properly. Mohun Bagan finished the first half with one-goal lead.



In the second half, MG Patha Chakra started off strong. Bagan's defence stood intact and denied any real danger in the box. In a counter attack, Rohit sprinted along the left side of the pitch and took a shot on his own, but it was punched out by the keeper. The opponents kept the pressure up and Dippendu made a good clearance of a cross. Soon after, Robilal made a goal-line save where his anticipatory skills made him position in time and place to block the goal-bound shot from crossing the white line.

Rohit's constant break-ins in attack proved crucial as he reached a through pass in the box first, pulling in two defenders as well as the keeper, and allowing Suhail to slot in an empty net from his assist. Mohun Bagan doubled their lead.

Golden Sub Bivan went onto the pitch and sent a header wide from a sensational corner from Kiyan. In dying minutes of the game, he redeemed himself by giving an assist to none other than debutant star, Sayan Banerjee. The final cross from the right wing had the curve on point as it slid ahead of three defenders, right into the feet of Sayan for him to smash it into the net.

A few minutes later, Sayan returned the favour by giving an assist to Bivan, this time setting the ball up for him. Bivan took a touch to send the defender to the ground and a powerful shot into the net resulted in the final scoreline of 4-0 in the name of the Mariners.



The Man of the Match award was given to debutant, Sayan Banerjee, for scoring a goal and providing two assists in the game.



With a clean sheet and goals galore against CFL experienced side, MG Patha Chakra, Mohun Bagan starts off the new season in dominating fashion. The World Cup fever set in amongst the players and fans, who celebrated the win together - Viking-style!

Mohun Bagan will face Kidderpore Sporting Club tomorrow, on 16th July at 3 PM at Mohun Bagan ground. The match will be broadcasted live on No. 10 Sports app and website. Tickets will be available at the ticket counter situated outside the ground.
