"Finishing in the second position is a failure." - Sergio Lobera Apologizes to Fans After Mohun Bagan misses the Title

The title race reached a heartbreaking conclusion for Mohun Bagan. Despite securing a victory against SC Delhi in their final league match, they missed out on the championship trophy due to an inferior goal difference compared to East Bengal FC, finishing the season tied on points but devastated in second place. Head Coach Sergio Lobera faced the media in a somber post-match press conference, taking full responsibility and issuing a heartfelt apology to the supporters.

When asked if bad luck played a part due to numerous missed chances throughout the game, Lobera reflected on the culmination of the entire season. "Without scoring again, that's the game. We had a lot of chances, it's impossible not to score. But finally it's not only today, no? I think in the previous games we also had clear chances to score. We are deciding the trophy because of goal difference, and if we are taking advantage, not only today, in previous games, it tends to be more clinical and to score, obviously the chances we were generating... maybe now the..." he stated, trailing off as he contemplated the missed opportunities.

Questioned about players missing clear sitters while wearing the heavy Mohun Bagan jersey, Lobera immediately shielded his team and shouldered the blame. "What is clear is I am here. I am the coach, I am assuming the responsibility. Finishing in the second position is a failure. We need to ask apologies to all our supporters because Mohun Bagan need to be champions and obviously, I cannot be happy in this situation," Lobera firmly declared. "About the kind of football, how many chances we generated in the first half? How many chances we generated in the second half? I think there are some circumstances affecting the players, affect to us, specifically, we played more with the heart than with the head. The game was open, we won the game but finally... Obviously I cannot be happy with the second half. But I think in the first half we played well. We had chances to score, not only one goal, many goals, I think we had more chances. Then I tried to defend this jersey as much as possible. I tell you again, apologize to all our fans, our supporters, this club. This club deserves more but we didn't do our job and we didn't get our target."

Addressing whether the players suffered a mental block preventing them from finishing their chances, Lobera refused to look for an easy way out. "Finally as a team when you are not generating chances is a big problem. When you are generating chances and you are not scoring is about more clinical. I cannot ask for more. But I think the team is generating chances as you told before and as we spoke before... We were one on one against the goalkeeper, chances were good. We had clear chances... But to speak now about the past, don't create excuses... try to find excuses now telling to you about the same number of points, goal difference could be different because we generated a lot of chances and we didn't score. I don't think this is the words I need to use today because I am not here to try to find excuses. I am here to assume the responsibility as a coach. And obviously when you are not getting the target, you cannot be happy."

A reporter pointed out that the team's set-piece conversion had regressed from being a major strength to a glaring weakness. Lobera didn't dodge the criticism. "I agree with you. The reason is we didn't score in set pieces because maybe we can work better and maybe we can improve. This is our balance, no? I am not going to put the focus in another one. I am the coach and I am assuming the responsibility. In this case, why we are not scoring goals? If the chance is one on one in front of the goalkeeper, it is my responsibility probably? I am the coach and I am here to put my face and to assume this responsibility."

When pressed about his thoughts on the future and next season, a visibly deflated Lobera shut down the topic. "No, I don't think now is the moment to speak about. I am very sad. I am very disappointed, I am very frustrated because our supporters, this club deserves more. And I am a very small, small, small part of this club. I don't think now is the moment to speak about the future. What is clear is, I am not happy because we didn't do our job and I came here to become champions and I am leaving not being champions. Then I cannot be happy. But speaking about the past or speaking about the future, now is not the moment. I think this press conference is speaking about this game."

Finally, asked if he had any message for East Bengal FC fans after their rivals secured the championship, Lobera concluded with sportsmanship: "As always when the opponent is winning you need to congratulate them and for sure we need to congratulate to the opponents."
