It’s the final matchday in the ISL, and the suspense surrounding the championship race is finally set to reach its climax on Thursday, 21st May, as the defending champions step onto the field for one last battle against SC Delhi at the iconic Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Salt Lake. The outcome of this decisive encounter, along with East Bengal FC’s result against Inter Kashi, will ultimately determine who lifts the ISL trophy this season.
The Mariners have a mountain to climb heading into the final matchday. Although they are level on points with their arch-rivals East Bengal FC, they trail by five goals in goal difference, making their task significantly more difficult. If East Bengal manage to secure a victory as well, retaining the title will become an extremely uphill battle for the defending champions, especially considering the form their rivals are currently in.
To make matters even tougher, Mohun Bagan Super Giant come into this clash on the back of three consecutive draws, adding further pressure ahead of the decisive encounter. But Mohun Bagan are known as the National Club of India for a reason — a club built on resilience, legacy, and moments of magic when all hope seems lost. From their historic triumph over the British in 1911 that inspired an entire nation to believe in Indian football, the Mariners have always carried a spirit that refuses to give up. And it is this very spirit that continues to provide a glimmer of hope for the faithful supporters in green and maroon.
For SC Delhi, however, this match is largely a dead rubber. They currently sit 11th in the table with 11 points from 12 matches. Their debut season has been underwhelming, though that was somewhat expected from such a newly formed side adapting to the demands of the league. Nevertheless, SC Delhi will undoubtedly be eager to end their campaign on a positive note — and there could hardly be a better way to do so than by defeating the defending champions on the final day of the season.

Coach: Sergio Lobera. - SC Delhi: Nora Fernandes (GK), Clarence, Ashutosh, Manoj Mohammed, Augustin, Amoh, Fane, Sourav, Sunny, Babovic, Rivas Mendoza.

Tactical Analysis
The Mariners have no option but to go all out in attack. They just need one thing — goals, and plenty of them. The more goals, the better their chances of retaining their title. There is a high probability that Lobera would include super-sub Cummings in the starting 11. He provides the required clinical finishing and off-the-ball movement which would greatly reduce the pressure on Maclaren. Apuia and Thapa would be crucial in controlling the midfield and feeding the balls to the strikers, while Liston and Sahal provide the necessary bursts of speed and moments of magic. Abhishek and captain Subhasish have to go an extra mile and support the flanks, providing the necessary crosses and stopping counter-attacks. Alberto and Aldred also need to be on their toes, as any defensive slip-up may lead to losing the title. Petratos and Robson would also be very crucial off the bench. Robson provides the necessary creativity while Petratos is known for his clutch moments. His heroics against Goa at the last moment helped us lift the shield last season, while his pinpoint corner against East Bengal in the last matchday led to the equalizer. Roles of Manvir, Suhail, and Kiyan can also be crucial off the bench. A whole collective display of brilliance is required if the Mariners have to retain their title.
SC Delhi would play completely pressure-free this match. But they would surely want to end their season on a high. They can greatly take advantage of Mohun Bagan's urgency to attack and hurt them on the counter. Their attack, consisting of Sunny, Babovic, and Rivas, is more than capable of doing so. And with the experience of ex-Mariners Ashutosh and Manoj at the back, their defence looks good too. Bagan have to work really hard to get the desired results against this team. And with Ayush, Aimen, Murgaonkar, Saji, and Hudu as subs, their bench strength looks good as well. This game is all set to be a cracker.

Players to Watch Out For
- Jason Cummings: The saviour for Bagan in the derby that could very well have ended their championship hopes, the 30-year-old Australian has not enjoyed as many starts as expected this season. However, whenever he has been given an opportunity, he has consistently delivered with impactful performances. With the title race going down to the wire, Cummings will undoubtedly be eager to finish the season on a high — and ideally with another trophy in Green and Maroon.
- Liston Colaco: The pacey winger has been a tremendous servant for the Mariners over the years. He was one of the standout performers against East Bengal FC in the first half, constantly troubling the opposition defence with his direct running and creativity. His blistering pace, flair, and ability to produce moments of magic could prove crucial in Mohun Bagan’s quest to retain their title.
- Tom Aldred: Often overshadowed by the attacking brilliance of his teammates, the veteran Brit has quietly been an absolute rock at the heart of Mohun Bagan’s defence. His composure, leadership, and wealth of experience will be crucial if the Mariners are to keep things tight at the back and successfully retain their title.
- Matija Babović: With five goals and an assist in 11 matches, the 27-year-old Serbian has been one of the few bright sparks in an otherwise underwhelming season for SC Delhi. Creative, composed, and dangerous in the final third, Babović has consistently delivered when his side needed him most. Facing the defending champions on the final matchday, he will undoubtedly be eager to make a statement and further establish himself as one of the standout performers of the season.
