Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal
BEFORE THE CITY TURNS GREEN AND MAROON
For Tutu Bose.
For the Badge.
For History.
Mohun Bagan walk into another Derby carrying the hopes of generations and the dream of a historic three-peat.
Long before the referee blows the whistle, the city begins to change. Tea stalls grow louder. Old arguments return. Streets split into colours. Memories from generations past suddenly feel alive again. Whether it is the countless derby goals of Barreto and Odafa, or the last-minute winner from Katsumi Yusa, or the brace from Dipanda Dicka, or the iconic free-kick followed by the unforgettable sten-gun celebration by Sony Norde, every Mohun Bagan supporter carries a different Derby story in their heart — memories that still refuse to fade with time.
And once again, the city awaits.
For another Derby.
For another hero to emerge.
For another memory that will be cherished for years to come.
By Sunday evening, the Salt Lake Stadium will no longer feel like concrete and steel. It will feel alive, with the voices of millions echoing in the skies!
This Sunday, Green-and-Maroon will walk into another battle against their oldest rivals in a match that carries far more importance than just three points. League tables may say one thing. Recent form may suggest another. Yet, history still carries its own weight. In the last ten ISL Derbies, Emami East Bengal FC have failed to register a single victory against Mohun Bagan. Nine ended in Mariners' triumph, while one finished level — a record that only deepens the psychological intensity surrounding Sunday’s clash. But Derby matches have never listened to logic because the Kolkata Derby is not played through statistics. It is played through passion, noise, belief and courage which create moments that live on forever. And perhaps that is why, no matter what has happened before, Mohun Bagan supporters continue to believe every single time the Derby arrives! This football club has spent over a century teaching its people one thing above everything else: Never stop believing in Mohun Bagan!
Supporting Mohun Bagan has never been about comfort. It has always been about faith — faith in a badge that has spent generations teaching its supporters how to survive heartbreak, carry hope when the weight of expectation feels unbearable.
Mohun Bagan supporters have witnessed moments far darker than difficult results or title-race pressure. One such chapter arrived during the turbulent 2012–13 season, when a controversial Kolkata Derby incident led to the club being handed a two-year I-League ban. Although the punishment was later overturned through legal appeal, Mohun Bagan were forced to restart the season from zero points with half the campaign already gone, and the fear of relegation suddenly became terrifyingly real.
But even then, surrender never felt like an option. The players fought relentlessly to preserve the club’s place in Indian football, and somehow, the Mariners survived. Moments like those remind supporters why Mohun Bagan have always felt larger than just a football club. Like a phoenix rising from ashes, this institution has repeatedly found a way to stand back up when everything seemed to be at the brink of collapse.
And during that storm, one figure emerged as one of Mohun Bagan’s guardians — Swapan Sadhan “Tutu” Bose, who left for his heavenly abode on 12th May, 2026. For generations of Mohun Bagan supporters, Tutu Bose was never merely an administrator or club official. He was the guardian of Mohun Bagan through some of its most difficult and transformative years. A businessman, parliamentarian, and football administrator of enormous stature, he still chose to call Mohun Bagan his 'third son'! And perhaps no sentence will ever explain his relationship with this football club more truthfully than that.
When the federation threatened suspension in the 2012-13 season, he personally loaned ₹2 crore to protect Mohun Bagan, a sum he later donated outright to the club. When Mohun Bagan struggled financially during the difficult years between 2015 and 2020, Tutu Bose reportedly sold his ships to help the club survive. On the last Mohun Bagan Day, while speaking emotionally about growing old and degrading health, he donated another ₹5 lakh because he wanted to remain a lifetime member of the club even in his next birth. That was Tutu Bose. Mohun Bagan was never just a responsibility to him.
This second home was family.
This place was faith.
This club was life itself.
And now, for the first time, Mohun Bagan prepare to walk into a major Derby without Tutu Bose physically present among the supporters. But somewhere above the Salt Lake Stadium, every Mariner believes that he will still be watching! This is why Sunday now feels bigger than football itself. The Mariners must win this one for him.

Current Table Standings
With only two matches remaining, the title race has tightened dramatically. Mohun Bagan sit level on points with table-toppers Emami East Bengal FC, trailing only on goal difference. In a season where the margins separating glory and heartbreak have become painfully thin, the Derby now carries consequences far beyond rivalry alone.
A victory would not only restore control in the title race but also hand Mohun Bagan the psychological momentum entering the final stretch of the season, while also keeping alive the dream of a historic third consecutive National League trophy.
It was only during the 2023-24 season that Mohun Bagan found themselves buried under criticism after a difficult run of results. The Mariners had slipped to sixth in the table, three consecutive defeats led to the departure of Juan Ferrando, and doubts around the club had begun to grow louder with every passing week. Then Antonio Habas arrived and soon after, everything changed.
Victory after victory followed as Mohun Bagan fought their way back into the title race through resilience, mentality and sheer belief. There were setbacks along the journey, but the Mariners refused to surrender.
The defining night arrived against Mumbai City FC at the Salt Lake Stadium. Mohun Bagan needed a win against a side they had never defeated before in the ISL. The pressure was enormous, yet sixty thousand supporters inside the VYBK continued to believe. When the final whistle arrived, the Mariners celebrated like never before all across the world, like a wave, impossible to stop! Mohun Bagan lifted the ISL Shield for the first time that night.
And then they did it again the following season, this time even more dominantly by securing both the ISL Shield and the ISL Cup.
Now comes the pursuit of something even greater.
Mohun Bagan stand just two victories away from completing a historic third consecutive ISL League triumph — a feat that could define an entire generation of Green-and-Maroon football and cement this side among the greatest eras in the club's everlasting legacy.
Before emotion takes over the stands and another Derby writes itself into history, post kickoff on Sunday, Mohun Bagan will once again attempt to answer expectations the only way champions truly can — on the football pitch.
The Expected Lineups
- Mohun Bagan (4-2-3-1): Vishal Kaith (GK), Abhishek Teckcham Singh - - Tom Aldred - Alberto Rodriguez - Subhasish Bose, Lalengmawia Ralte - Anirudh Thapa, Jason Cummings - Sahal Abdul Samad - Liston Colaco, Jamie Maclaren.

- Emami East Bengal FC (4-2-3-1): Prabhsukhan Gill (GK), Mohammed Rakip - Anwar Ali - Kevin Sibille - PV Vishnu, Mohammed Rashid - Jeakson Singh, Bipin Singh - Miguel Figueura - Edmund Lalrindika, Youssef Ejjezzari.

Where will The Derby Be Decided?
Mohun Bagan are expected to return to full strength after rotating several players in the previous fixture. Sergio Lobera will likely rely heavily on midfield control through Apuia, Sahal, and Thapa while attempting to control territory through sustained possession and stretch the gameplay along the wings.
The return of Jamie Maclaren and Liston Colaco could prove crucial. Maclaren’s movement inside the box remains amongst the sharpest in the league, while Liston’s ability to isolate defenders in one-versus-one situations could become an important attacking outlet against East Bengal’s defensive shape. Cummings' ability to fill up the pockets of spaces can prove to be very crucial especially near the East Bengal penalty box. A good Jamie-Joker combination can also be expected.
Sahal Abdul Samad may once again hold the creative key for Mohun Bagan. Even during the frustrating draw against Inter Kashi, the midfielder remained one of the few players consistently attempting to create openings through quick combinations and intelligent movement between the lines. With Apuia and Thapa expected to return alongside him in midfield, Sahal could find greater freedom to receive the ball in advanced spaces and initiate attacking moves centred around Jamie Maclaren or Jason Cummings. His creativity, close control and ability to unlock defensive structures, may prove crucial in shaping Mohun Bagan’s attacking rhythm in the Derby.
East Bengal, meanwhile, are expected to approach the game aggressively down the wings with the help of pacey wingers like Bipin, Vishnu and Edmund. Their main man in the middle, Miguel, will be the playmaker, who is also capable of scoring from far. Their confidence has grown significantly in recent weeks, and they will use this momentum to disrupt the match early.
Set pieces, emotional control, and one-man shows may ultimately decide the high-voltage match. Because in Derbies, the smallest moments often become the biggest stories.
The Heartbeat in the Stands
The most important part of every Derby — The Supporters.
No rivalry in Indian football carries emotion on this level because no rivalry carries supporters like this one!
From early morning train journeys to sleepless nights before kickoff.
From nervous prayers to endless debates.
Mohun Bagan supporters prepare for the Derby differently.
Some will travel across cities.
Some across states.
Some even across countries.
But all of them will carry the same colours into the stadium with their heart beating in unison for the Mother Club.
Because supporters do not lose hope before a Derby begins, And perhaps now, more than ever, this team needs its supporters again.
Footballers feel pressure. Coaches feel criticism. But when the Salt Lake Stadium begins to roar " Amra Kara? Mohun Bagan", something changes emotionally inside a Derby. Momentum shifts. Legs find energy again. Fear disappears. And suddenly impossible moments begin to feel possible.
This football club has survived for over a century because generations of supporters refused to stop believing during difficult moments.
That responsibility now belongs to this generation too.
Two matches remain. Two victories that could change everything!
If Mohun Bagan have taught Indian football anything across generations, it is this: Never write off the Mariners before the battle begins!
