"We need to fight till the end and believe." - Sergio Lobera Remains Defiant After Dramatic Derby Draw Leaves Title Race Wide Open
The highly anticipated Kolkata Derby delivered a proper end-to-end action. After a tense stalemate, East Bengal's Edmund broke the deadlock in the 84th minute to score the opener. However, Mohun Bagan showed immense character as Jason Cummings struck a dramatic equalizer in the 90th minute. The Mariners even had golden opportunities to snatch a win in stoppage time but failed to convert, resulting in a thrilling draw.
Head Coach Sergio Lobera addressed the media post-match, reflecting on the intense clash and the sheer spectacle of the occasion. "It was one of the best games for different reasons. The environment, the stadium, a derby, you are playing to win the trophy," he remarked. "Both of us wanted to win the game. I agree, maybe it's one of the best games I saw till now in ISL."
Speaking on the tactical flow, Lobera stood by his team's approach. "Our plan worked well. We had chances. We started the game very well," he explained. Acknowledging the tight nature of the game, he added, "I think it was a very good game for both teams. But I think it was more our mistakes than the plan of the opponent that allowed them to take the lead."
Regarding the team's missed chances at the very end, the coach admitted they need to be sharper. "We'll have to be more clinical in the last third, we need to make better decisions in the last pass," he noted, expressing frustration over missed clear-cut chances that could have secured the three points.
The result leaves the title race resting on a knife's edge. After 12 matches, both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal are tied at 23 points. However, East Bengal currently sits at the top of the table with a superior Goal Difference (+18), sadly leaving Mohun Bagan in the second spot (+13).
When asked about this goal difference scenario, Lobera was unbothered, putting the pressure firmly back on the opponents. "They need to win and we need to win. If they are not winning, the goal difference doesn't matter because finally we are champions," he stated confidently.
Everything now comes down to the final matchday on the 21st, where Mohun Bagan will face SC Delhi, and East Bengal takes on Inter Kashi. To lift the league title, the Mariners have three paths:
1. Win by a massive margin of 7 or 8 goals to completely overcome the GD deficit.
2. Win their match and hope East Bengal drops points (draw or loss).
3. Manage a draw and hope East Bengal loses.
Looking ahead to the do-or-die clash, Lobera's message was unwavering and ambitious: "What we need to do is fight till the end and believe. It's not the ideal scenario we wanted, but we have our options, and we are going to fight till the end. We need to believe because it's possible. We have one game more, we need to be ambitious in the last game and try to do our job."
