My mentality is when you are playing, you always play for THREE POINTS, says Coach Lobera

“It will be a battle of midfield, a battle of defence, and a battle of strikers”-Apuia

The stakes are rising, and Mohun Bagan find themselves at a defining moment of their campaign.

As the Mariners prepare to host Mumbai City FC at the VYBK tonight, the importance of this fixture goes far beyond just three points. Mumbai, under Petr Kratky, remain a strong contender for the title. They are indeed a team capable of shifting the momentum of the league in a single night.

But the table has begun to open. Jamshedpur FC, who had enjoyed a strong early run, have stumbled in back-to-back matches, most recently dropping points in a surprising 1–1 draw against Sporting Delhi.

The opportunity is now in Mohun Bagan’s hands. A win tonight would not only reinforce their dominance but also give them a crucial cushion in the title race.

Ahead of the fixture, head coach Sergio Lobera addressed the media in the pre-match press conference, outlining his thoughts on the challenge posed by Mumbai City FC. For the Spaniard, the approach remains unchanged.

“This is my mentality,” Lobera said. “When you are playing, you always play for three points. After the last game, my feeling was that we lost two points. So now, we need to win the next one if we want to be happy."

That next step comes against one of the most complete sides in the league — something Lobera acknowledged without hesitation. “Mumbai City is a very good team,” he said. “They have a good balance, a very good coach, and strong players. They are ready to compete at the highest level.”

With both sides vying for the top spot in a shortened ISL season, the margin for error remains razor-thin. Lobera emphasized on the importance of the fixture, not just in terms of points, but in terms of momentum!

“To go into the break with a win would be very good for us,” he said. “Not only because of the table, but because we would be winning against a direct competitor!”

Tactically, the challenge is equally demanding. Mumbai’s attacking structure and quick transitions have been a defining feature under Kratky, and Lobera made it clear that his side must find the right balance. “It is very important to be compact,” he explained. “When we lose the ball, we cannot allow them space to attack. And when we have possession, we need to dominate and find the spaces to score.” At the same time, the Spaniard dismissed any reliance on past records between the two sides.

“For me, the past is the past,” he said. “It cannot affect what is going to happen in the next game.” There was also positive news on the injury front. “Both Robson and Alberto are fit to play,” Lobera confirmed, providing a timely boost ahead of a crucial encounter. Yet beyond tactics and team news, this fixture carries an emotional edge.

Apuia Ralte, now a key figure in Mohun Bagan’s midfield, once represented Mumbai City FC. His move to Kolkata was not received kindly by sections of the Mumbai faithful. In a previous encounter, he was targeted with fake currency notes thrown from the stands, a gesture meant to question his loyalty. But for Apuia, the focus remains firmly on the present. “It’s been two years,” he said. “As footballers, we change teams, we change cities. It’s normal. The most important thing is to help the team.”

When asked about the challenge ahead, the midfielder kept it simple. “I just follow what the coach says,” he said with a smile. “If I have a plan, then maybe I will replace him as a coach.”

There is also an awareness within the squad about the importance of the midfield battle — a contest that could well decide the outcome of the match. “It will be a battle of midfield, a battle of defence, and a battle of strikers”, said Apuia.

As the Mariners prepare to step onto the pitch, one thing is certain — this is no ordinary league fixture. This is a clash between two title contenders.

A contest for control at the top of the table and a rivalry that continues to grow with every passing season of ISL.

As the lights shine down on the VYBK tonight, another chapter will be written. For Mohun Bagan, the objective is clear. Win. Create distance. Stay on top. Because in a season where margins are thin, nights like these define Champions!
