Breaking: Bangladesh Wants Lobera, but Mohun Bagan likely to extend contract

In a surprising turn of events, the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has shortlisted current Mohun Bagan head coach Sergio Lobera as a candidate to replace the departing Javier Cabrera, whose contract expires in April 2026.

Sergio Lobera joined Mohun Bagan in November 2025 from Odisha FC, in a deal that is valid till May, 2026. As Bangladesh
prepare for life after Cabrera, they are "prioritising a coach who has already worked in South Asia" according to local Bangladesh Sources, as quoted by Bangladesh Footy.

Bangladesh have former Indian National Football team boss Igor Stimac in their wishlist too.

Mohun Bagan currently tops the ISL table with a one-point lead. Sergio Lobera's side is the favourite to retain the ISL title, and Mohun Bagan are planning for the future, keeping Sergio Lobera in mind, MBFT can exclusively confirm.

Mohun Bagan bosses are impressed with the tactical vision of Sergio Lobera, and they feel that he is the man to lead Mohun Bagan for many years. Mohun Bagan are currently waiting for clarity on ISL's future. The commercial partner's tender is open, and parties are likely to submit bids by the end of this week. Mohun Bagan will also evaluate the team's performance before taking the final call.

Mohun Bagan have planned multiple extensions, but talks are on hold due to the nature of ISL's uncertainty. An unnamed source informed MBFT that the club would not want Sergio to leave just after a 3-month ISL season, and they are willing to tie him to a long-term deal once the future roadmap is in place.

As MBFT exclusively revealed in 18 October, 2025 about Bagan's interest in Sergio, we can again confirm that Mohun Bagan are not willing to release Lobera, and if everything goes well, Sergio will continue at Bagan in 2026-27 too.
