Mohun Bagan's I-League winning squad of 2019-20 probably weren't the favourites at the beginning of the season. They did not have the best of starts. They drew against Aizawl and lost 2-4 against Churchill at home; and people started to accept Bagan's fate of close misses from after the 2014-15 Premiership.

But things changed quickly. They only drew two other games and won the rest of the games until the season had to be curtained prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic with 4 matchdays left. But Mohun Bagan had comfortably won the League by then. They were already 16 points ahead of second placed East Bengal.

The boys had created history. Celebrations had to be muted as the world was shutting down, but the greatest club in the country was back where it belong. This article celebrates the journey of that I-League squad from after the 2019-20 season.

(Note: The list only contain players who were part of the I-league squad, players who represented Mohun Bagan only in the state league- CFL, the Durand Cup or the Sk Kamal Cup are not mentioned here)

Staff

Coach:
Kibu Vicuña 🇪🇸
(Jose Antonio Vicuña Ochandorena)

DOB: 20 November 1971

kibu

The mastermind of our 5th and our most dominating national league title win with an unbeaten run of 14 games, and even defeating COVID to win the league with 4 games to spare, was a simple man managing Lithuanian and Polish teams in top tier before coming to Bagan.

Bagan stood out that season with a highly coordinated passing football, orchestrated by Vicuña's ideas. The most iconic and signature goal being the 23 pass goal against Churchill in Goa.

Post Bagan's title win, Kibu was getting offers from ISL clubs like Jamshedpur and Kerala Blasters. He penned down the contract with Kerala Blasters, but an abysmal run of games meant Kibu had to part ways with two games yet to be played. He returned to Poland to work with Polish 2nd division club LKS Lódz.

In 2022, he came back to Kolkata, to take charge of the newly formed Diamond Harbour FC in CFL 3rd division, and guided the team to promotion to CFL 2nd division.

In 2022-23 season, Kibu was appointed as Mohammedan coach in I-League in place of Andrey Chernyshov over a poor run of form. The poor run didn't stop and Kibu was replaced by Mehrajuddin Wadoo, who in the next season will be replaced by Chernyshov himself, who is still the Mohammedan coach at present.

In 2023, it was announced by IFA, to merge the 1st and 2nd division of CFL, meaning DHFC would play in CFL Premier Division. The Club, under Kibu, has progressed into the Championship round in both 2023 and 2024.

The Club was nominated by IFA, to participate in I-League 3, in both 2023 and 2024. Though Kibu’s team lost out due to Goal difference to eventual champions SC Bengaluru in 2023, he did not leave the chance unanswered in 2024. Kibu rallied his team to take the I-League 3 crown and achieve promotion to I-league 2 2024-25.

Foreign Assistant Coach:
Tomasz Tchórz 🇵🇱

DOB: 28 April 1992

tomasz kibu

Tomasz has been part of Kibu's coaching set-up as assistant manager from the very day Vicuña started his managerial career of senior teams, and followed him to every club he went to, like Mary’s little lamb. From Lithuanian top division club FC Riteriai and Polish club Wisla Plock, and then Mohun Bagan.

The Polish man has put his experience at Mohun Bagan into words in his book, “Make It Ahead Of The Virus”. In 2020, he again followed Kibu, this time to Kerala Blasters as assistant manager. The next year, though Vicuña had left, he stayed on with Kerala Blasters, as Head Coach of Kerala Blasters Reserve team.

In this season (2024-25), he is still in the same job for four years now, continuously producing young talents, with the likes of Azhar, Aimen, Vibin, who have already made into their senior team playing in ISL.

Indian Assistant Coach:
Ranjan Chowdhury

DOB: 2 December 1956

The man from Dhanbad is not unfamiliar with Kolkata maidaan. Starting with being Assistant Coach to Trevor James Morgan in East Bengal in 2010, he continued there till 2014, before taking up the position of coach at Tollygunge Agragami and then Mohammedan in 2016. In 2017, he again returned to East Bengal as Caretaker Coach and then Assistant Coach.

He was the Assistant Coach for Bagan from the 2018-19 season. In 2018, he also coached the Bengal Santosh Trophy team to lead them into the final, where they lost to Kerala on penalties.

In 2023-24 season again, he was given charge of the Bengal Santosh Trophy team, but this time his team didn't make the cut to the main round. In between, he had worked with a number of CFL teams, lastly with the 2023-24 Bhawanipore FC squad, which made it into the Championship round of CFL.

He is also associated with the Ramkrishna Mission Football Academy project of Narainpur, Chhattisgarh. Recently he was appointed as the head coach of the India U-20 team, which lost in 2024 SAFF U-20 Championship  Semifinal to Bangladesh , and failed to make the cut for the next round of 2025 AFC U-20 Asian Cup Qualifiers.

Goalkeeping Coach:
Dipankar Choudhury

DOB: 7 March 1978

dipankar

The man from Naihati started his career as a scout, before moving to Ozone FC Bengaluru as a Goalkeeping Coach. His next job was with the 2019 Mohun Bagan squad, with whom he will be a part of the I-league winning team.

His coaching meant Mohun Bagan kept 7 clean sheets in 16 matches, the highest in the league (6 by Sankar Roy, 1 by Debjit Majumder). Post the I-league triumph, he moved to Roundglass Punjab FC in 2020, and then to Northeast United FC. In the inaugural edition of Super League Kerala, he is in charge as the Goalkeeping Coach of Calicut FC and helped them become the Champions.

Physical trainer:
Paulius Ragauskas 🇱🇹

DOB: 19 June 1990

It wouldn't be a surprise that the man from Lithuania did start in the Lithuanian league. First, with a brief stint with FK Lietava (later Jonava), and then for a long spell at FC Riteriai as Fitness Coach for more than 3 years.

It was during this stint, Vicuña (along with Tomasz as his assistant coach) came to the club as Head Coach. So when his old friends Kibu and Tomasz came to Mohun Bagan, he wasn't left waiting for long. Though he wasn't  part of the Durand and CFL campaigns, he took the reins from the Sk Kamal Cup and then onto I-League.

His silent work meant Mohun Bagan always had the best players at disposal, and only Colinas suffered a major injury problem that season. Post the I-league triumph, the trio of Kibu-Tomasz-Paulius went to Kerala Blasters. After Kibu's termination with Kerala, Paulius moved to his old club, FC Jonava, only to return to Roundglass Punjab FC as Fitness and Conditioning coach.

He then again reunited with Kibu to work with DHFC (2022)and then Mohammedan SC (2023). After this stint, though Kibu went back to DHFC, Paulius returned to Lithuania to work with FK Kauno Zalgiris.

Chief Performance Analyst:
Nitesh Singh

DOB: 6 January 1992

nitesh
(Courtesy: Nitesh Singh Instagram)

Nitesh was doing a job that was probably new in the maidaan circuits. He got many a people curious about what a member of the coaching staff is doing with camera and tripod, during coaching seasons, that too from the stands.

Starting his career with the Minerva Punjab U18 side, before taking responsibility of Lonestar Kashmir FC as Technical Director, then Manager in 2018-19. He was hired by Mohun Bagan as the Chief Analyst for Kibu Vicuña’s team. Just like Mohun Bagan, he also got his chance to show his work in ISL in the 2020-21 season and then next season, but with NEUFC.

With Kibu coming back to Kolkata to work with DHFC, Nitesh also joined the team, and also later migrated to Mohammedan SC along with Kibu. Even after Kibu moved on from MDSP midseason, he continued his duties till end of season.

At present, he is working with Thane City FC, a club from his hometown that is competing in the Maharashtra State Youth League.

The Santosh Trophy winner with Bengal, started his career with Peerless. After stints with Mohammedan and ATK, he signed for Mohun Bagan and soon became the chosen one under the bar.

After helping us win the I-league, he moved to East Bengal, thus completing his tenure in all 3 of the ‘big clubs’ of Kolkata. He also was a part of Hyderabad FC, for half season in 2021. He returned back to Kolkata to play for Mohammedan (2022), and then Bhawanipore (2023 and 2024).

The man from Andalusia came to India just for one year, and won the league title with Mohun Bagan and then went back to doing what he was busy doing - representing Spanish lower division clubs.
Before playing for the Mohun Bagan, he played clubs from Andalusia and neighboring autonomous community, like Cordoba CF B and Granada B (both from Andalusia), Real Murcia (from Murcia), CD Badajoz (from Extremadura), Salamanca CF (Castile and León) and Inter de Madrid (Madrid).

After his stint with Bagan, he returned back to Andalusia, representing Linares Deportivo (2020-21) and RB Linense (2021-22). He is not representing any club at the moment(2024).

The ‘Punjab da munda’ rose into prominence by playing for Pune FC for four years (2010-14). For the next 2 years he moved to Salgaocar (with a loan spell to FC Pune City in ISL) and then to Minerva Punjab.

From 2017, he was part of the Mohun Bagan and in his third and final year, won the league title with the team. He then moved to ISL, but with Northeast United FC, spending three years with clubs (2020-23). For the 2023-24 season, he was part of Vatika FC, a club participating in I-league 3 from Haryana.

In 2024, he was part of the inaugural edition of Super League Kerala with Malappuram FC, sharing the dressing room with some fellow ex-mariners (revealing below, shortly).

#6
Ashutosh Mehta

DOB: 21 February 1991
Position: Right Back
Starts in I-League 2019-20: 14

Ashu

The ‘Mohun-Bagani’ from Maharashtra started his career there with Mumbai FC, and then moving to other clubs from the state such as FC Pune City, Bharat FC, Mumbai City. His first move outside the state bore fruit, as he won his first I-league title with Khalid Jamil led Aizawl side in 2016-17.

He was then picked up by ATK in the ISL draft the next year and the year after, in 2018-19, he went back to represent FC Pune City. After his second I-League triumph, this time with Mohun Bagan, he again moved to ISL, this time with NEUFC.

The next year, though, he did play for Mohun Bagan in ISL, donning the green-and-maroon jersey even in the Asian stages. During the ‘Remove ATK’ campaign, he put out a message in his social media pages, urging the management to respect the fans’ sentiment with a picture of a banner in background reading ‘Respect our history heritage and tradition’.

However, on 21 September 2022, reports of a two-year ban on Mehta , first appeared, for failing a doping test. Ashutosh maintained his innocence, and though 2 valuable years of his career were lost, he continued to train harder. Finally on 27 April 2024, it was reported, Ashutosh’s ban period is over. He signed up with the Khalid Jamil led Jamshedpur FC side, slotting into the playing eleven like he never left.

Komron Tursunov 🇹🇯

DOB: 24 April 1996
Position: Right Winger

Komron
(Courtesy: RaySportz)

The Tajik international started his career as a teen in his hometown of Tursunzoda, with his hometown club FC Regar TadAZ, and in three years at the club, set fire by scoring goals after goals. In 2018-19, tajik ‘big club’ Istiklol scooped him up.

Before 2019-20 season, he went for trials in European clubs like Utrecht. In the winter transfer window of 2019-20, he signed for Mohun Bagan replacing the injured Julen Colinas. In his five appearances for Bagan, he scored twice, and also assisted twice.

He put his name in the history books by putting in the net, the 23-pass goal Mohun Bagan scored against Churchill. His restlessness inside the box was a thing to behold, waiting for chances to score, or creating some chances himself to change the score-line. After winning the 2019 title with Mohun Bagan, Komron has participated in every I-league campaign till date (till 2024).

For 2020-21, he signed with TRAU to help them finish 3rd in the league. In 2021, signed for Tajik club, FC Khujand, and came back to India later in December to sign for Rajasthan United. However in January 2022, he signed for Churchill. In 2022-23 season, he returned to TRAU. In 2023-24 season, he changed sides to join Gokulam Kerala.

For the 2024-25 season, Komron is still without any club, busy being a hands-on dad. With I-league starting soon, it would be interesting to see whether the 28 year old Tajik international again signs for any I-League club or pursues his chances elsewhere.

Salva Chamorro 🇪🇸
(Salvador Pérez Martínez)

DOB: 8 May 1990
Position: Striker
Starts in I-League 2019-20: 0 +2 sub-ons

Salva
(Courtesy: Salva Chamorro Facebook)

Born in the autonomous community of Valencia, he started his career with the reserve team of ‘the yellow submarines’ in Villarreal C (2008-09) and then Villarreal B, before being loaned out to a number other Spanish lower division clubs, one of them being FC Cartagena (a club where Armando Sadiku played, before his move to India).

He then moved out to the Balearic Islands, playing for Athletico Baleares in 2013. He then switched a couple of Catalonian clubs, before signing for Portuguese top tier club CD Tondela in 2015-16, only to return back to Barcelona B team.

His first taste of Asia came in 2016-17, as he signed for Hong Kong Pegasus. Between 2017 and 2019, he navigated around the Mediterranean sea, 1st with two Spanish lower division clubs, then he went to the city of Ibn Batuta’s birthplace, Tangier in Morocco, signing for Moroccan top tier team Ittihad Riadi Tanger.

In 2018-19 season, he went to the eastern part of the Mediterranean sea, signing for the Greek club, ‘Doxa Drama FC’. Chamorro's second stint in Asia started with Mohun Bagan in 2019. Though he scored 9 goals in total, in CFL, Durand Cup and Sk Kamal Cup, his misses stood out and outnumbered his goals.

In December 2019, Chamorro was released from Mohun Bagan with he playing in only two games in the national leagues, to make room for a better striker. In 2020, he signed last professional contract with Mar Manor FC ( who then gained a promotion from Spanish fourth tier of football). At the end of the season, Salva retired from football.

Baba Diawara 🇸🇳
(Papa Babacar Diawara)

DOB: 5 January 1988
Position: Striker
Starts in I-League 2019-20: 12

Baba
(Courtesy: Self attributed via Republic World)

Diawara signed for Mohun Bagan in December 2019 and was probably the first striker to sign for Mohun Bagan after playing in the A-League. Taking up #9 jersey of Salva Chamorro, he also took up the job and responsibility of Chamorro, and in a much better fashion. Of the 12 games he took on the field for Mohun Bagan, he found the net 10 times.

Starting with silencing the opposition fans in the Kolkata derby, with his first goal, he scored in 9 consecutive matches, till his last match with Bagan, an 80th min goal against Aizawl to ensure Mohun Bagan wins the title, that too with four matches to spare.

Diawara was born in the land of Dakar rally, just outside the capital city of Senegal, Dakar. At an young age, he joined local club 'Jeanne d'Arc' before moving to Europe in Portugal signing for Maritimo B in 2007, and graduated to the senior side, Maritimo. In the 4 years of donning the green-red jersey, he became an important player of the club.

In 2012, he signed with Spanish club Sevilla, but didn't get enough gametime and so was loaned out to Levante and then Getafe. He then returned to Maritimo for one last swansong in 2015-16. In 2017 he signed for A-League club Adelaide United for two years, before his stint with Bagan.

After the title win with Bagan in 2019-20, Baba continued his journey in India by signing for Punjab FC for the 2020-21 season, combining well with Beitia, to score goals. His last team seems to be an Omani club ‘Al Nasr Club', where he last played in 2021-22 season. He has been without any club since then.

DOB: 29 September 1990
Position: Attacking Midfielder
Starts in I-League 2019-20: 16

Joseba
(Courtesy: MBAC Media)

Nicknamed ‘Green Octopus’ by the Bagan faithfuls, Beitia was the heart and engine of the Bagan attack, orchestrating passes throughout the field, dictating play and constantly feeding the ball in the box and adding some pre-assists, assists or goals to his name.

It was his assist only in the 80th minute against Aizawl that Diawara scored to win the league title in a runaway fashion, taking an unassailable lead of 16 points, with four matches to spare. Beitia's career can be divided into two parts, before and after the 2019 league title win. Before, fully in Spain, and after the league win, mostly in India.

He started with the youth team of the famed Real Sociedad academy and graduated into the Real Sociedad B team in 2010. After 3 years with the reserve team, he changed teams, mostly in Spanish 3rd tier - Segunda Division B, and most of the clubs being from northern Spain (CD Sariñena, UD Somozas,  and later, Racing Ferrol and Real Unión) with Marbella FC in between, from Andalusia, southern Spain. His last club before moving to Bagan, was Real Unión, from his own province of Gipuzkoa in the Basque region.

Post title win, the creator in chief, joined hands with Papa Diawara, to score goals but this time for Roundglass Punjab FC. Beitia stayed on for another year after Diawara left, before switching sides to new-entrant RUFC in 2022-23. In the same season, he got his chance to play in ISL, for NEUFC, for half a season. In the 2023-24 season, he started with newly promoted Delhi FC and then moved to Panama, to play for UMECIT FC.

In the 2024-25 season, he again returned to India, to sign with the Super League Kerala club Malappuram FC in their inaugural edition, sharing the dressing room with again Gurjinder Kumar (and another person from the same squad, revealing soon) as well as ex-Mariners (like Anas Edathodika and Henry Kisekka) and other ex I-league players (Pedro Manzi, Alex Sanchez).

Alexander Romario Jesuraj

(On loan from FC Goa)
DOB: 26 July 1996
Position: Winger
Starts in I-League 2019-20: 1 +6 sub-ons

Alexander
(Courtesy: MBAC Media)

The only player in the list to have won back-to-back I-league titles. In his second year of first tier football with Chennai City FC, he was an integral part of the Akbar Nawaz coached side which won the I-league title in 2018-19. In the next year, he signed for ISL side FC Goa and then moved to Mohun Bagan on loan.

With Naorem nailing the left winger role, and Komron and Suhair taking responsibility of the right wing interchangeably, Jesuraj didn't get enough starts, but he would always prove his mettle whenever he got the chance. A classic example would be, in the 6-2 win over Neroca, he scored the last goal of the game with his first touch in the game after coming on the field, of a Beitia assist.

Not only did he win the I-league title twice, this time with Mohun Bagan in 2019-20, his loanee club FC Goa also won the ISL Shield. He returned to FC Goa and continued his title-winning run, by winning the Durand Cup with the Juan Ferrando coached side. Ferrando also gave him chance in the Asian stage, as he made his AFC Champions League debut, vs Qatari side Al-Rayyan SC in the group stage on 14 April 2021, and went on to feature in 5 group stage matches.

In 2022, he signed for Chennaiyin FC, and after 2 seasons with the club and last featuring for them in the Durand Cup 2024. With I-League starting soon, he has reportedly signed with I-League side Gokulam Kerala for the next two upcoming seasons. He is though busy lighting up the stage with Tamil Nadu in Santosh Trophy 2024-25.

Chullova makes it into the prestigious list of winning the I-League title twice, first time with Khalid Jamil’s Aizawl FC. He was part of the Aizawl squad since 2013, and won the league title in his last year of the club in 2016-17. After that he was a regular in the Kolkata maidaan, as signed up for our Arch-rivals East Bengal in 2017.

After 2 years in the Leslie Claudius Sarani, he switched to Bagan just in the right time for 2019. Though he didn't get much gametime, he did get a 2nd I-league trophy to his name. He graduated into ISL the next year, but with East Bengal. In 2021-22 season, he signed for Mohammedan Sporting to play in I-League.

In search of gametime, he dropped down to state leagues, signing for Chanmari in his home state Mizoram, before coming back to Kolkata, to Bhawanipore FC. He is playing there for the last two years (2023-25).

Nongdamba Naorem

DOB: 2 January 2000
Position: Left Winger
Starts in I-League 2019-20: 16

Naorem
(Courtesy: MBSG Media modified by MBFT)

“Messi, Messi, Messi, Ankara Messi, Ankara Messi, Goaaalllll”...  Naorem’s dribbling ability and skills got him the nickname “Indian Messi”. But the nickname came with its own burdens.

Coming from the Minerva Academy, Nongdamba represented India in the U-17 Fifa World Cup in 2017. In 2017-18, he was loaned out to Indian Arrows, where he scored a brilliant solo goal against Shillong Lajong on 26 December 2017. Taking the ball on the left wing, and then beat three defenders to enter the box, and then another defender to put it into the net.

In 2018, he signed for the Kerala Blasters B team, and then in 2019, he was loaned to Mohun Bagan. Impressing Kibu with his skills, he was the only Indian to feature regularly in the attacking quartet of Beitia-Nongdamba-Komron-Diawara, scoring 2 goals and assisting 5.

Post I-League triumph, he returned to Kerala Blasters and was involved in a ‘swap-deal’ with ATK Mohun Bagan, involving another youngster to win the league title with Mohun Bagan, Subha Ghosh. There were  2 separate deals though, with Subha Ghosh going to Blasters, but due to some technical issues, Naorem to Mohun Bagan didn't materialise in 2020-21.

In 2021, Naorem signed with Goa for 2 years. In 2023, he again donned the Mohun Bagan jersey for the Bastob Roy trained side, for the CFL, but he did not make it into the senior team. Instead he signed up Jamshedpur FC for the 2023-24 season, continuing till Durand 2024. In 2024-25, he signed for Malappuram FC to play in the inaugural edition of Super League Kerala, sharing the dressing room again with Beitia and Gurjinder Kumar.

Julien
(Courtesy: MBAC media)

Another player in the list from Donostia-San Sebastián and part of the Real Sociedad B team, but he couldn't quite fit into the Mohun Bagan team like Beitia. In his 5 seasons with the Real Sociedad B team, he was sent on loan 3 times to other teams from Gipuzkoa, to CD Lagun Onak (2007-08), SD Beasain (2008-09), and Real Unión (2012-13).

In between two year stints with CD Toledo (from Castile-La Mancha) (2013-15) and CD Leonesa (from Castile and Leon) (2016-18), he spent one year in Catalonia with the club Lleida CF. In the 2018-19, signed with UCAM Murcia before moving to Mohun Bagan the next year.

His first and only move outside his country didn't go as planned as he got injured in the game against Gokulam Kerala in I-League. Though he got to start in four matches in I-League, he got neither any goal nor any assists to show in those matches, but would be present  in the team practice sessions to encourage the team. He was then released mid-season to incorporate Komron in the team.

He went back to Spain to sign for Villarrubia CF (from Castile-La Mancha) in 2020-21 season and then Club Portugalete (from Basque region) in 2021-22 season in the fifth division of the Spanish football pyramid. He is without any club at the moment.

Khiangte’s first season seems to be the 2016-17 I-League with Aizawl FC. In the 2017-18, he was part of the Mohun Bagan squad, on loan from FC Pune City FC Reserves. The next year, he was signed by Mohun Bagan on a permanent basis.

Though he didn't play in I-League a single minute, and made it into the substitution bench in only a few games, the youngster was kept for the 2020-21 season by the ATK Mohun Bagan management for two years.

From 2022-23 season onwards, he is plying his trade for clubs playing in the lower divisions of I-League and state leagues with FC Bengaluru United (2022-23), Kerala United (2023-24) and Downtown Heroes (2024-25).
