What Went Wrong with Mohun Bagan at the Calcutta Football League?

Mohun Bagan had yet another disappointing outing today at the Kalyani Stadium as they drew 0-0 against a much weaker Calcutta Customs team in a very important CFL encounter.  The Mariners had made two changes from their previous CFL loss against George Telegraph with Leewan and Vian coming in for Sumit and Serto.

The match was pretty boring with no side creating much infront of the goal. Although the Mariners were better defensively compared to the last match, their problems with finishing in the final third remain unsolved.

With just 13 points in 9 matches and currently placed 7th in Group B, Mohun Bagan’s chances of qualification have become very slim. Questions will be raised on new Reserves Coach Deggie Cardozo whose tactics have been largely unimpressive.

What Went Wrong with MB Reserves this Season?

A common response on why a tried and tested approach from last season was ditched has been that now there is an intent to implement the same formation as what the senior team plays across all youth teams.

It is difficult to make sense of such comments as the concept of a strict formation is a thing of the past and modern football principles are built on foundations of dynamism and adapting to the 'game state' as well as the opponent.

Furthermore, just because a particular formation works well with the senior team, by what logic can it be said that every other youth teams will have the tactical and technical requirements to be able to implement the same?

If our Reserve team is in a transitional phase, was it worth it to sacrifice the prestigious Calcutta Football League for that, or doing so by taking part in Friendly tournaments during preparation for the CFL would have been the wiser choice?

And if Molina due to any reason decides to switch to a 4-3-3 mid season, will all of Mohun Bagan's youth teams follow suit and abandon their 3-5-2? Thus, the need for the hour is to have personnel who can identify the root problems of our Reserves team and devise a plan which best suits us.

MBFT, as always, backs our players who give their everything on the field and will defend their commitment to our badge, but also wants to understand why recent results have been inconsistent with a batch of players which hasn't been changed much from yester-season when they got into the Super 6 with relative ease.
