Tom Aldred Joins Mohun Bagan on a Multi Year Deal!

In a move, which is definitely going to strengthen the defense, Mohun Bagan has announced the signing of Tom Aldred on a multi-year deal on 2nd July 2024, Tuesday.

Who is Tom Aldred?

Standing at 1.88 meters, Aldred primarily plays as a center-back. The 33-year-old English defender, has been a stalwart for Brisbane Roar in the A-League Men since joining the club in 2019. In the 2023-24 season, he continued to be a key figure in Brisbane Roars' defense, contributing to the team’s performance.

His defensive exploits have made him an integral part of the squad. He is proactive but doesn't get too aggressive to tackle and clear the ball as fast as possible, rather he specialises in slowing down the opposition attacker and blocking off passing lanes. Although he is 33, he still has decent pace and acceleration when required and acts as the last man on the line to sweep off dangers.

What also is of significant importance is his attacking instincts. He is generally comfortable on the ball, but can get a bit sloppy occasionally. As a defender he has an Expect Goals (xG) of 2.38 and Expected Goals on Target (xGoT) of 3.11, both this stat being the highest of any CB in the 23/24 A-League season. He is an aerial threat and has a knack of getting headed goals from corners.

With a passing accuracy of 89.3%, having the most touches in opposition box than any other CB in the A-League last season, a duel win accuracy of 65.6%, registering 0.32 blocks per 90 (better than 95.8% CBs in 23/24 A-League), it is expected for him to not only serve as a good backup for Domestic Competitions but even start alongside his soon incoming partner in the AFC Champions League 2.

Mohun Bagan Coach, Jose Molina on this signing:

‘Tom Aldred is an experienced player to strengthen our defense. He has great physique, forceful and is very aggressive defensively. Tom is a dominator in aerial balls and also has good technique to the build up play.’

The newest Mariner, Tom Aldred on his move:

‘I am delighted to be joining Mohun Bagan Super Giant. It will be an honour to wear the Green and Maroon jersey and I am extremely excited to get started.

My career has taken me to England, Scotland, Australia and now India. I am looking forward to this next step of my journey in representing this incredible club in the ISL and the Asian Champions League and helping the team thrive and compete on all fronts.

I am well aware of the incredible history of Mohun Bagan and I’ve have watched some of the recent successes from afar. I will give my absolute best every single day to represent Mohun Bagan. I am looking forward to working hard and contributing to further success for the club, the fans, and my teammates. I can’t wait to get over to India and Kolkata and meet everyone. See you all very soon.’

Aldred's signing is a significant coup for Mariners, who have been looking to bolster their defense ahead of the new season, as both the shield winning foreign defender duo Hamill & Yuste left the club few days ago. Tom, with his impressive track record and leadership qualities, is expected to make a big impact at the club.
