MOHUN BAGAN CRASHED OUT OF THE AFC CUP GROUP STAGE AS WE TASTED A HEAVY DEFEAT IN A DO-OR-DIE MATCH

Despite taking the lead in front of the home fans Mohun Bagan faced a heavy defeat against Odisha at Saltlake Stadium. Mohun Bagan went into the AFC Cup campaign as a clear favorite to win the group stage. But as things stand Mohun Bagan are out of the AFC Cup after yesterday's defeat against Odisha.

Coming into the match, Coach Juan Ferrando started with a 3-5-2 formation. After Anwar Ali's injury, Mohun Bagan have been struggling with three at the back in the last few matches. But Juan decided to stick to his old tactics and put Bose, Hamil, and Yuste at the back. Vishal was the guardian at the goal, Liston and Asish on the wings, and Sahal, Hugo, and Glan in the middle with Jason and Sadiku in the front.

Mohun Bagan started the match with a lot of intensity and pressed Odisha very high. The plan was to keep the ball and press high when not having the ball. Mohun Bagan looked sharp in the initial minutes and got a couple of chances but failed to convert any of those. The first goal came from a move when Liston dribbled past Odisha players entered the opponent's half and passed the ball to Asish Rai who found Boumous in the box with an early cross. Hugo danced past Narendra Gehlot and smashed the ball into the net. But the lead didn't last long as the former Mohun Bagan player Roy Krishna equalized within 14 minutes. Asish Rai tried to head out a cross but the ball fell into the foot of Roy Krishna who buried the ball with a fine valley. Right after the first goal, the Mariners conceded another one from a free kick. Ahmed Jahouh picked up Roy Krishna with his free kick, Roy then crossed the ball for Mauricio. Mauricio just had to guide the ball into the net and he did that perfectly. Mohun Bagan was searching for the equalizer, Jason Cummings found Liston Colaco with a through ball whose attempt was blocked by Ahmed Jahouh. In the 41st minute, Odisha extended their lead as Mauricio put a through for Cy Goddard. Cy dribbled past Glan and beat Vishal Kaith with a cool-headed finish.

In the second Odisha's plan was to sit back and hit Mohun Bagan on the counter with the pace of Roy Krishna and Cy Goddard. Mohun Bagan was in search of goals and Juan Ferrando Brought on Thapa and Kiyan for Sadiku and Glan. Hugo Boumous carried the ball into the left flank and crossed it for Kiyan who put the ball in with a beautiful header and pulled one back for Mohun Bagan. Mohun Bagan came close to scoring but Sahal managed to hit the ball on post only. However, Mohun Bagan put their all players up front which Odisha took full advantage of and scored two goals in the added time. Aniket tapped in Roy Krishna's cross and Isak chips over Vishal Kaith to seal the deal. 5-2, a humongous defeat that a team like Mohun Bagan don't face often. Before the match started Bashundhara Kings defeated Maziya which made the match a must-win battle for Mohun Bagan. However, Mohun Bagan couldn't fulfill the expectations of millions of people.

Coach Juan won the Durand Cup and earned the victory in four consecutive ISL matches. But if you crash out of the AFC Cup group stage despite having the best squad you deserve some criticism. He kept on playing three-man defense, putting Glan ahead of Deepak and Abhishek, playing Liston and Manvir in the wing-back position which certainly did nothing good to his team. But his rigidness in sticking to his tactics is now harming the team. The Coach and Management need to think something differently as there are so many things to play for this season.

MBFT PLAYERS RATINGs:

Vishal Kaith had a day to forget. Conceding five goals at home is a nightmare for any keeper. So only 4/10 will be justified for him.

Our defense also failed miserably in this particular match. Hector looked sloppy, Subhashish made a crucial mistake in the second goal of Odisha and Hamil also did nothing significant. A 5/10 for Hamil and a 4/10 for both Hector and Subhasish.

Asish Rai is clearly out of form as he did nothing impactful in this match. On the other hand, Liston was trying his best as he created the chance of the first goal and took two very close free kicks.
Ashish Rai 4/10 & Liston Colaco: 7/10

In the midfield, there were both good and bad performers. Glan had a poor game as usual and Sahal was brilliant in patches. So a 4/10 for Glan and a 6/10 for Sahal. But Hugo had an outstanding game and was the best player for the Mariners. Scored one, created one, and earned an 8/10 from our MBFT team.

But the performance from our attackers was shambolic. A fair amount of chances has been given to Armando Sadiku but he has failed to settle in the team. Jason also wasn't involved much in the game and got a very less number of touches. A 4/10 for both of them.

Among the substitutes, Kiyan Nassiri scored a beautiful header and created some vital chances. Otherwise, Thapa had an average game. Suhail & Deepak had no time to do any wonder.
Kiyan: 7/10
Thapa: 5/10
Deepak: 5/10
Suhail: 5/10

and Our Coach Juan Ferrando ? Hardly 3/10. JuanBall was totally clueless. Wrong Starting XI choice, time mismanagement, no plan B/C costed our AFC Cup dream.
