TRANSFER TALKS: Mohun Bagan planning long term future with Joni Kauko

After the ACL injury, Mohun Bagan's star Midfielder Joni Kauko is sidelined for almost a year now. During the ATK Mohun Bagan era, Joni was one of the crucial part of the Juan Ferrando team, and many expected Joni will stay with the ISL Cup Winners for a long time.

After Joni's injury, Mohun Bagan struggled to find their groove, but with few adjustments, Coach Juan Ferrando guided Mohun Bagan to the club's first ISL victory. In the victory parade, the club Chairman Dr. Sanjiv Goenka announced that even after injury, Joni Kauko is set to stay with team Mohun Bagan.

But, after the summer Transfer window opened, Mohun Bagan went into market aggressively to overhaul the foreign brigade. Only foreigners retained were Hugo Boumous, Joni Kauko, Dimitri Petratos and Brandon Hamill; and the management recruited 3 new foreigners in Jason Cummings, Armando Sadiku and Hector Yuste. A team can register six foreigners in one ISL campaign, so Mohun Bagan had to exclude Joni Kauko from the squad, and registered the rest set of foreigners. For AFC Cup, a team can register multiple foreigners but can keep only 6 in a match day squad, but Mohun Bagan haven't registered Joni Kauko yet in the squad.

Few days ago, few media reports emerged that Mohun Bagan are in talks to terminate Joni Kauko's contract, but as per our info (shared in X) management haven't taken a decision yet.

As per our report, Mohun Bagan is scheduled to do a fitness and medical checkup for the player in December/January. If Joni Kauko pass that test, management is willing to extend his contract for a few more seasons, else, the contract will be terminated; but as per our sources, Joni Kauko is recovering pretty well, and Mohun Bagan management doesn't intend to loose out on him so easily.
