Game Analysis
Mohun Bagan survived and came out stronger with three points against Chennaiyin FC. The midfield was non-existent in majority of the match and the only real chances came from crosses, one of which was perfectly delivered by Liston to be converted by Manvir.
Frequent positional changes during the match caused a lot of confusion amongst the players and the supporters in the stands. Keeping the questions reserved, the challenge is upon us tomorrow and the Mariners Brigade will be attending the weekend match in large numbers, hoping for a fight and a dominating display of football at the iconic VYBK.
While Miguel and Apuia are still unavailable, Maclaren is practicing with the team. Primarily a second striker, he can come on as a substitution and combine well with Lee up front in the second half. Instead of sacking the midfield, Samir as CDM with Thapa and Sahal up front can enhance link-up play and enable high pressing.
Drazic can play as CAM if Liston gets to start on the left wing. Chhangte needs to play as Right Winger the whole game, where he is most dangerous! Instead of unilateral overlap, a midfield pivot along with going across the pitch once in a while, may open up gaps that can be exploited for through passes and 1-2-1 defensive line penetrations.
Key Tactical Focus: Midfield connectivity for transitions, compact defensive unit and proper positioning sense can make all the difference against Punjab FC.
Punjab FC have made a strong start under their new Greek coach, Pavlos Dermitzakis. Similar to the last match where Brison and Ramon had the better of Mehtab, Suhail can pose trouble on the left side. Tekcham needs to deal with the pacey youngster. Bose was decent in the previous match and he can start as LB. If need be, he can be substituted in the second half for Alex Saji who needs some crucial gametime. Planas and Messi Bauli are the only attackers that can pose trouble in the box, both of whom Alberto and Rahul can deal with.
Pressing Ricky and Bishu in deep central zones can lead to instant counter attacks. Winning one-on-one duels on the wings and displaying individual creativity will be crucial in the attacking half.
