Game Analysis
A setback, then a comeback. Mohun Bagan have acquired 3 points from the first two away games. Inspite of months of training and pre-season, the players lack role clarity and this needs to change! Bagan needs to score more goals, utilize set pieces and find the combination - all of which they can achieve when the attacking players play their desired role.
Unlike Lobera, Coach Panos prefers direct football, less passing and more pressing. Panos' philosophy of 'Gegenpressing' has been the only thing that has been effective till now. The passes are often intercepted due to lack of support in the midfield. Direct football without lack of role clarity invites more chaos than simplicity. Triangle formation or wingward aerial switches are ways to provide support instead of unidimensional wing overlap that force natural wingers to fall back more often than not.
Timely substitutions can bode well for Mohun Bagan. Sahal and Suhail could come off the bench to provide more creativity in the attacking half of the pitch. Players who had underwhelming performances like Liston and Bose should be replaced by the likes of Sayan and Robilal who deserve an opportunity to prove themselves. Owing to his versatile profile, Samir is another sub that can have a huge impact irrespective of the scoreline.
Key Tactical Focus: Improved finishing, role clarity and proper substitutions could prove decisive for the Mariners.
The team had 10 days to practice and sharpen their skills. Although Apuia and Maclaren will be missing the game, Tangri, having served his suspension, is available alongside Abhishek Suryavanshi!
Chennaiyin FC have had a shaky start similar to MBSG. Their coach, Clifford Miranda, has been quite defensive in his gameplay approach. Ramon, despite being selfish, can be dangerous with Talal and Irfan by his side. Talented Left Winger Brison should get a start to fuel their attack. Ayush is quite good at distributing the ball from behind but their defence still lacks synergy. Proper runs to meet the long balls in the wide field of VYBK can break the offside trap!
