INDIA VS URUGUAY | FIFA Int'l Friendly Match Preview

The Final Challenge awaits!

Three days after Brazil walked onto the pitch at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Uruguay, four-time world champions, is prepared to take on India.

THE LESSONS FROM BRAZIL

The 4-0 scoreline will naturally dominate the headlines, but India must look beyond it. The match exposed areas that need improvement. Khalid Jamil himself pointed to soft goals, individual errors and a number of mistakes after the defeat.

At the same time, there were positive signs. India's defensive structure frustrated Brazil during the opening phase, while the Blue Tigers looked to use long balls and transitions to release their forwards. The offside trap also repeatedly disrupted Brazil's attacking movements early in the game. The first 25 minutes, India locked horns with the 5-time world champions.

Those lessons could prove valuable against Uruguay. For Jamil and his players, the challenge is therefore not simply to put up another brave performance. It is to show that they have learned from the previous one.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF SOUTH AMERICAN CHALLENGE

Uruguay are not Brazil. Their football carries a different identity, built around physical intensity, defensive discipline and a willingness to compete for every ball. What quality they possess in midfield and attack need not be mentioned separately.

20th Ranked Uruguay end a 9 match loss streak after a convincing 4-1 victory over South Korea. Darwin Núñez scored twice in that match, while Giorgian de Arrascaeta also found the net. The visitors will also begin a new chapter under Diego Forlán. The former Uruguay international and Mumbai City FC player is taking charge of the national team for the first time in this international window.

THE TACTICAL BATTLE

Just 34 % possession, yet India managed 9 shots, including 3 on target. They also attempted 52 long balls, completing 25 ones, and 13 successful dribbles showing their willingness to bypass Brazil's press and attack in transition. Against Uruguay, the gameplay has to change.

The midfield trio of Anirudh Thapa, Sahal Abdul Samad and Apuia will again be crucial, because India cannot afford to spend another ninety minutes simply absorbing pressure. Thapa's composure, Sahal's creativity and Apuia's ability to play out of pressure must give India a route from defence to attack.

Defensively, India recorded 11 interceptions and 23 clearances against Brazil. But the real challenge now is transforming those moments of resistance into counter attack. There is little room for recklessness. India must know when to attack, when to hold their shape and when to take the risk. Similar to Panama match, India must not back down without a fight for every single duel.

PROBABLE XI's

India (4-3-3): Albino Gomes (GK); Abhishek Singh Tekcham, Anwar Ali, Mehtab Singh, Akash Mishra; Apuia, Anirudh Thapa, Sahal Abdul Samad; Manvir Singh, Ryan Williams, Ashique Kuruniyan.
Head Coach : Khalid Jamil.

Uruguay (4-3-3): Santiago Mele (GK); Guillermo Varela, Ronald Araújo, Sebastián Cáceres, Santiago Mouriño; Emiliano Martínez, Rodrigo Bentancur, Rodrigo Zalazar; Federico Vinas, Darwin Núñez, Maximiliano Araújo.
Head Coach : Diego Forlan.

PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR

RYAN WILLIAMS and MANVIR SINGH : Forming one of India's most important attacking combinations against Uruguay, Williams has already shown his ability to find decisive moments, scoring against Panama and 2 shots on target against Brazil. Manvir, too had one shot on target against Brazil, and he managed to open the Brazilian defence on multiple occasions with his pace. The two can complement each other and turn deadly against Uruguay.

SAHAL ABDUL SAMAD and ANIRUDH THAPA : Sahal could once again be India's creative link and his partnership with Anirudh Thapa could be just as important to the team's overall structure. Thapa was one of India's more composed performers against Brazil, helping the midfield remain organised against sustained pressure. Sahal, meanwhile, can operate between the lines and look for the key pass.

ABHISHEK SINGH TEKCHAM : The way the young Manipuri defender dealt with Vinícius Júnior deserves special appreciation. He recorded 3 tackles and 6 duels won, while also attempting a shot early in the game. With another opportunity to test himself against international-level attackers, he will need to bring the same concentration, aggression and composure against a Uruguay side that will look to attack India's defensive structure in different ways.

APUIA : Against Uruguay, India will need players who can receive the ball under pressure and make the next pass quickly, something that Apuia excels at.

DARWIN NÚÑEZ : Darwin Núñez arrives in Kolkata in confidence after scoring twice against South Korea. His pace, movement and physical presence give Uruguay a completely different threat in the final third.

RONALD ARAÚJO : One of Uruguay's biggest defensive strengths, his physicality, pace and ability to defend one-on-one situations could make life difficult for India's forwards.
