It’s painful to Lose at Home, admits Coach Sergio Lobera

“This game must be a lesson for us.” - Sergio Lobera

The stage was set.
The stakes were clear.
But the fate did not side with Mohun Bagan.

At the VYBK, the Mariners fell short against Mumbai City FC in a clash that carried the weight of a title race decider. What could have been a night to create distance at the top instead turned into a setback, as Mumbai seized the moment and walked away with three crucial points.

For Mohun Bagan, this was more than just a defeat. It was turn of tables in its quest to defend the National Champion title.

Speaking after the match, head coach Sergio Lobera did not hide his disappointment. “It’s painful,” he admitted. “It’s painful to lose at home, especially in games like this.”

The frustration stemmed not just from the result, but from how the game unfolded. Lobera pointed towards the first half as a phase where control slipped away. “In the first half, we opened the game too much,” he explained. “We needed more balance. When we lost the ball, they[MCFC] were dangerous in transitions. We spoke about this before the game.”

Mumbai City capitalised on exactly that — quick transitions, exploiting space, and punishing moments where Mohun Bagan failed to stay compact. Yet the second half told a different story. The Mariners pushed forward, created pressure, and came close to finding the equaliser. But the finishing touch never arrived.

“In the second half, we did everything to score,” Lobera said. “I think we deserved more, but it was not possible.”

It was a familiar theme: chances created but not converted.

Set pieces, often a decisive weapon in tight games, also failed to deliver. Despite earning 17 corners, Mohun Bagan could not make them count. “The numbers are there,” Lobera admitted. “We need to improve in this aspect.”

The defeat also shifts the dynamics of the title race. A win would have allowed Mohun Bagan to head into the international break with a cushion at the top. Instead, the situation has tightened, with Mumbai now taking the lead and the top position in the Table while the Mariners have to settle for 2nd - an unfamiliar place for the reigning Champs.

“Of course, we are disappointed,” Lobera said. “We wanted to go into the break at the top. Now the league becomes more difficult, but nothing changes our target. We want to win the trophy.

The focus, as always, remains on response. In a shortened season, where the margin for error is minimal, every dropped point carries weight;every game becomes a test of character.

“We need to learn from this,” Lobera emphasized. “This game must be a lesson for us.”

There were also moments of frustration surrounding officiating decisions, but the Spaniard refused to use them as an excuse. “I don’t want to speak about excuses,” he said. “If we want to win, we need to be better.”

As the players walked off the pitch and the noise of the VYBK slowly faded, the reality of the night settled in. The plan was there. The preparation was there. But in matches like these, the smallest details make the biggest difference. Mumbai seized their moments. Mohun Bagan let theirs slip.

The road ahead now leads to an away fixture against Jamshedpur, where the Mariners will have to respond — not just with performance, but with points. Because in a season where the race is tight and unforgiving, nights like these do not just test teams. They define them. The team must consolidate, learn and prepare for many more battles coming up ahead to come out victorious in the war of Indian Football clubs in ISL.
