Mohun Bagan loses first match of ISL against Mumbai City FC | Match Review ISL 2025/26

There are few games in Indian football that decide the final outcome of the League.

Everyone lives for these games.

The Excitement!

The anticipation is palpable when these matches are around the corner!

Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City FC is one such fixture that has attracted a lot of eyeballs ever since Bagan got into the ISL. The fight between these two teams has always been a deciding factor for the championship. And it was no different when these two teams met on Friday evening at VYBK.

The atmosphere at the stadium was electric. You had to be there to witness the energy. People from different walks of life come together to cheer for their team. The journeys they make, the prices they pay for the travel, just to enjoy a 90 minute match of football is a feeling that cannot be described with mere words. And all they expect in return is a good performance from the team.

Lobera's sides have always been a thorn in Bagan's quest for absolute dominance in Indian football. So when he joined Bagan, it was widely thought that he'd convert this All-Star team into a winning machine. And the first few matches did indicate that. The expectations were high and so were the stakes.

After a draw against BFC in the first away match, Lobera went for Kaith in goal, with the trusted pairing of Mehtab and Alberto as the centre back pairing. Abhishek and Bose started as the fullbacks. Apuia and Thapa continued their partnership in the middle of the park. Dimi and Liston started on the wings with Cummings coming into the match day starting line up in the number 10 role. Maclaren started upfront.

Both teams started on an attacking front. Mumbai, having recently lost out on the City Football Group funding, had to cut down on the star power that they usually signed in the off-season. Inspite of that, they showed no signs of being pushed on the back foot. Unlike Bagan's other opponents, Mumbai showed courage and went like for like with Bagan in terms of shots and possesion. Chhangte almost came close to opening the score but couldn't slot it past Vishal Kaith. The warning bells were there for Bagan and the onus was on them to get things right and strike first. But Mumbai would just not yield.

Soon after the visitors got their reward. A textbook goal that people have learnt to associate with City based clubs, quick movement of the ball via short passes and a clinical finish by Noufal meant Bagan going down in the 26th minute. And suddenly, the whole stadium went silent.
Pin drop silence. This was not in the script.
Bagan were the favourites, not for this match alone but for this entire season. Yet they went behind in one of the most crucial matches of this season. They had just 64 minutes to mount a comeback.

Mohun Bagan tried. Cummings came close with a header in the 39th minute. But it was brilliantly dived and saved by Lechenpa. A few minutes later, Dimi troubled the keeper with a long range effort but it was saved comfortably. Mumbai didn't dwell on the lead and kept the pressure high. Changte forced Kaith into making another save with a blistering run down the right. Kaith was needed again almost instantly to save a shot on the rebound from Ortiz, but he came up trumps and prevented the scoreline from getting worse. The half came close with a free kick from Dimi Petratos. As was the story of the half, he came close but Lechenpa came up trumps and deflected the ball over the goal. Bagan went into the break with a one goal deficit. Not a big deficit, but it would need a herculean effort to turn things against a Mumbai side determined to win.

The second half was a dog fight. Both teams went blow for blow. If Pereyra Diaz came close with a shot on the Bagan goal, Macca came close almost instantly at the other end. The end-to-end flow of this game, which has become a hallmark of this fixture, was truly on display.

Bagan almost put the ball in the net in the 63rd minute. The stadium erupted in joy, but it was short-lived. The linesman decided to flag Dimi for offside, and the equaliser was ruled out. Yet, Bagan kept trying. The effort was there, but there was no bite.
Robinho came close with his free kick. So did Petraros. Free kick after free kick, Bagan came close. But Lachenpa stood like a mountain and thwarted everything that came his way. Bagan's last chance of the game fell to the feet of Dimi which, no surprises, was a free kick that disappeared into the stands! Much like Bagan's luck that has gone to hell in the previous game. And with this, Bagan's poor form against Mumbai City continued.

At the end of the game, the commentary team rightly assessed the match, saying Mumbai City FC had pick-pocketed Bagan for the 3 points. And it's hard to argue. A team with depleted resources still managed to beat a Bagan side with superstar players and a well known coach.

How does this result affect the League Table? MCFC sit first currently, and provided that they match Bagan's results for the remainder of the games, will win the league. In a curtailed season, every match is essential. Bagan will be ruing the missed opportunities from last night. Big games like these matter to the fans and the players out there have to do better!

But as they say, there's no time to dwell on the past. Bagan need to make sure to remain unbeaten for the remaining games. Can Bagan still manage to salvage the League from here? Only time will tell. For the time being we can only keep praying, supporting and hoping for the best.
