Winning a derby is practically more important than winning a title - Oscar Bruzon
East Bengal head coach Oscar Bruzon recently did an interview with the Spanish portal Galicia Exterior, and the Spaniard didn't shy away from praising Mohun Bagan.
When describing the stature of Mohun Bagan. Mr Bruzon referred to the club as Kolkata's own. He said, "Mohun Bagan, in a way,[is] the club of Kolkata itself," as per the report. "East Bengal,[is] linked to the people who, after the problems in Bangladesh, had to leave that country; they are Bangladeshi Hindus who fled Bangladesh over a century ago and settled in this state, West Bengal." Bruzon also added.
It's fair to say Oscar is one of the most successful Spaniards to coach in South Asia, and as the first Spanish coach to arrive in India, he knows the mindset of the people in Kolkata. He knows the emotion of the "BORO MATCH" aka Kolkata Derby, and agreed it's the most important match for the East Bengal FC fans.
Oscar Said, "Focusing on our team, it's a club that, when things are going well, can draw between 50,000 and 60,000 fans to the stadium. They place immense importance on derbies. Winning a derby is practically more important than winning a title."
Acknowledging the beauty of the Kolkata Derby, "Our stadium is called Salt Lake Stadium, and I think it's among the three or four largest in the world in terms of capacity. It once held 120,000 spectators for one of the derbies a few years ago. Today, of course, there's greater security control, and derbies can draw between 70,000 and 80,000 people." Bruzon added.
East Bengal have started the campaign well, and they are the ones to challenge Mohun Bagan this season. Oscar Bruzon is playing some beautiful football, and it's pretty clear from the early signs that the Kolkata Derby this season may well become the title-deciding game.
