"It's difficult to play worse than this" | India v. Mauritius Match Review | Inter-Continental Cup 2024

The Blue tigers had yet another disappointing performance today as they drew 0-0 against Mauritius in their first match of Hero Intercontinental Cup, 2024 at the Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad. The Indians were expected to win the match as Mauritius, ranked 179 in the world, were a much weaker team.

This was their first match under the Spanish manager Manolo Marquez and it was not quite the welcome result he was expecting. The Indians lined up in 4-2-3-1 formation in the start with Amrinder in goal, Bheke and Sana in the heart of defence, Ashish Rai and Jay Gupta roaming the flanks as full backs, Apuia, Jeakson and Thapa commanding the midfield,Chhangte and Liston in the wings with Manvir upfront.

There was hardly any intent shown by the players. Mauritius being a much weaker team had their plan fully set up and it was evident from the 1st minute that they were aiming for a draw. Though, the Indian forwards tried to break down the Mauritian defence, they were just not clinical enough infront of the goal.

Inshort, the match was very dull and boring and this performance raises a serious question on the team. Though it’s still very early to judge Marquez, he must do some changes in tactics in the upcoming matches as today his tactics definitely failed to make an impact.

India have not won a single match since the beginning of the year and have scored just 2 goals. Coaches have changed but the result has not. These stats have raised serious concerns and many fans have even questioned the capability of the players and the AIFF.

Our players got just 4 days of preparation time (the Mohun Bagan players just 2, five of whom featuring in the starting XI) while Mauritius got 3 weeks. It is obvious that our footballing system needs radical changes otherwise our dream of becoming a footballing superpower will remain a dream forever.
