Mohun Bagan Reserves pull off an emphatic 8-1 win over Railway FC
The Mohun Bagan reserves put behind their previous two CFL performances and pulled off an emphatic 8-1 win over Railway Football Club at Bibhutibhushan Stadium, Barrackpore. The Mariners made 5 changes from their previous draw against Calcutta Customs with Abhisek Balowary replacing Raja in goal, Serto and Adil replacing Vian and Fardin in attack, Brijesh replacing Taison in the Wing and Captain Sumit Rathi returning in place of Amandeep. Railway FC pulled of an early goal in the 6th minute courtesy of a horror mispass by Sumi,t which was fully utilized by Rahul Haldar, thus giving Railway FC the lead. But the response from Mohun Bagan was exhilarating. Serto opened the scoring in the 21st minute and from then on it was goals galore. Adil scored in the 23rd minute, Serto again in the 31st, an own goal from RFC’s Jagai in the 34th, Salah scoring twice in the 38th and 45th minutes, Uttam Hansda in the 78th with Tapan Haldar finishing the party by scoring in the 89th minute courtesy of a fumble by the RFC goalkeeper.
Overall it was a much more improved performance by the Mariners after the last two debacles. The forwards were quick and clinical while the defence was also compact. Brijesh and Ravi were at their best in the wings. Raj showed 'ball playing defender' ability again. The only point of concern for Mohun Bagan is Captain Sumit Rathi’s form. Horrific mispasses at crucial places from him are proving to be costly for the team.
The Green and Maroon brigade are currently placed 4th in Group B with 16 points in 10 matches. Though chances of qualifying to the next round still remain slim, these kind of positive footballing displays would definitely please the fans and boost the confidence of this young team.
