[- Durand Cup -]

Mohun Bagan defeated Mohammedan SC 3-1 in the mini-derby of Group Stage, where Liston Colaco scored 2 goals and Suhail Bhat put the final nail in the coffin. The Mariners Brigade triumphed over BSF FT with a 4-0 final scoreline led by brace from Liston and one goal each from Manvir and Sahal. The final match of Group stage against DHFC ended 5-1 in favour of the Mariners, where all distinct goals came from Liston, Sahal, Thapa, Maclaren and Cummings.

With 9 points from 3 matches and topping Group-B, Mohun Bagan faced Group-A toppers, East Bengal FC, in the quarter-finals. Despite a goal from Thapa in 68', the lack-lustre performance owing to dearth in team fitness and late preparation camp setup, Mohun Bagan lost the first derby of the season 2-1 to East Bengal. Diamantakos scored a brace in that game for the rivals.

[- IFA Shield -]

After 4 years gap, one of the oldest tournaments of Asia was brought back to life in 2025. Prior to the commencement of IFA Shield 2025/26, Mohun Bagan was scheduled to face Sepahan SC in September but the team refused to fly out to Iran after AFC declined their request to move the game to a neutral venue. This led to their withdrawal from Asian Champions League Two and left a black mark in the rich history of the club along with a 2-year blanket ban from AFC Continental tournaments and fine of over $100,000.

The Mariners faithful were frustrated with this decision and it showed all over social media, training grounds, spectator stands and even on the streets. Along with a demand for clarity from the Management, the fans urged the management to participate in this historic tournament whose instance in 1911 is inextricably linked with the identity of Mohun Bagan.

Mohun Bagan defeated Gokulam Kerala 5-1, starting off with an own goal followed by a brace by Maclaren and a goal each from Alberto and Robson. Up next, Mohun Bagan faced United SC and won 2-0 with a goal from Dimitrios Petratos and Jason Cummings. With these 2 wins, Mohun Bagan qualified for the IFA Shield final as Group Toppers to face none other than arch rivals, East Bengal FC.

The last time both giants faced each other in a final was Durand Cup 2023. 10-men Mohun Bagan lifted the trophy that day, courtesy of Dimitrios Petratos' goal. This time, the stakes were much higher and different. The management reached out to the fan clubs, urging them to back the team in the derby and prevent incidents like 16th August, 1980 tragedy. The Red-and-Yellow army came into the matchup knowing that they were the better team on recent match performance and match fitness. The players graced the field with cheers from both stands, but as soon as the match started the Mariners rolled back the flags to protest towards the questionable withdrawal decision from ACL 2. This match was more than just a derby for them. It was a matter of pride and respect that they always felt under the shades of the Mother Club.

The 125th IFA Shield final started on uneven footing but the players understood the stakes. They fought for the ball at every corner of the pitch. In the first half, Maclaren attracts a foul in the box and penalty is awarded. Cummings fails to cover it after he sends it into the skies. Soon after, Mahesh takes a run down the left wing and sets up Hamid to score for EBFC. Hamid almost scored another one after his next shot hit the post. Before the half time whistle, Sahal dribbled inwards from the right wing and passed across to Liston, who laid it in front of Apuia. The man stepped up and buried it into the roof of the net.

In the 2nd Half, both teams created many chances but failed to capitalize on them. With scores level, the match extended to Extra Time. The players showed no intent of slowing down and gave everything they had on the pitch. The final whistle blew, signaling a penalty shootout.

Miguel, Robson both score. One went right, the other went left.
Kevin, Manvir both score. Both went left.
Mahesh, Liston both score. Both went right.
Jay Gupta went right. Vishal lunges and saves it. Dimi stepped up and went right. No chance to save. Mohun Bagan took the lead in the penalty shootout.
Hiroshi shot at the right corner and scored. Mehtab walked up to the ball, got on his toes and threw Debjit on the right, to score on the left side.
Mohun Bagan won the Derby Final. Mohun Bagan won the IFA Shield 2025!

The 22-year drought in IFA Shield came to an end with this win. 21st IFA Shield for Mohun Bagan!

[- Super Cup -]

A week later, Mohun Bagan travelled to Goa for AIFF Super Cup. In the Group Stage, the first opponent was Chennaiyin FC. Maclaren scored twice and Mohun Bagan was through. But the next game came with a bit of shock and disappointment. Mohun Bagan was held back in a 0-0 stalemate by IFL team, Dempo SC. EBFC, being in the same Group, also drew against Dempo SC but scored more goals against CFC, which gave them the upper hand going into the derby.

Mohun Bagan gave a below-par performance at Fatorda Stadium, Goa, which resulted in a goaless draw and subsequently got knocked out of the Group Stage, separated by just Goal Difference from arch rivals who qualified for the QF.

[- Indian Super League -]

ISL started late in February due to AIFF's negligence and inefficient procedural methods. Mohun Bagan's head coach, Francisco Molina was bid farewell after a disappointing results over the past couple of tournaments. Experienced ISL Coach, Sergio Lobera, was brought from Odisha FC, as replacement. Amey Ranawade arrived from KBFC on loan to strengthen the squad. After two months of pre-season training and a couple of matches against lower division teams, Mohun Bagan came into ISL with renewed vigour, hunger to taste victory and defend its title!

The main formation under Coach Lobera was 4-2-3-1 where the full backs overlapped on the wings. He focused more on ball possession and fluid positioning. In this 13-match league, Mohun Bagan started off strong by defeating KBFC 2-0 (Maclaren and Tom scored), CFC 2-0 (Maclaren and Dimi scored), MDSC 5-1 in mini-derby (Robson brace, Maclaren, Manvir, Dimi scored), Odisha FC 5-1 (4 goals from Maclaren, one from Alberto). With 4 consecutive wins under the belt at home, MBSG travelled to Kanteerava for their first away game against BFC.

Just like all previous matches, Mohun Bagan averaged 600 passes in the game but this time, they failed to find the back of the net. Vishal made crucial saves to keep a clean sheet as the match ended in a goalless draw.

The Mariners returned to VYBK to face their toughest ISL opponents, Mumbai City FC.

In all the previous matches, Mohun Bagan was in control of the games, but MCFC played different. They often broke through the backline and punished us. Vishal did everything to keep the scores level until Noufal found the back of the net in a counter attack. This resulted in the first loss for the Mariners in ISL 2025/26.

The next away match, Mohun Bagan had to settle for a draw as Jamshedpur FC scored a late equalizer and Liston's world class curler could only secure one point for us.

There is a saying - When Mohun Bagan steps on the field, they play to win! The next match was at home against Punjab FC. The opponents scored first, but Maclaren equalized for us. The scored again taking the lead for the second time in the match and golden sub, Sahal, scored a screamer from the midfield to bring us back into the game. The final nail in the coffin came from none other than Jason Cummings from a freekick that found the back of the net through a crowd of players. A hard-fought victory that defines the path of Champions.

For the next match, Mohun Bagan travelled to Guwahati to play against hosts, NorthEast United FC. Robson scored at 5' and got the early lead, but the match took an unexpected turn. Post 35 minutes, it started raining heavily. At half time, when the game was to be resumed, the referee and match commissioner decided to delay the match as proper playing conditions were not being met. An hour later, the rain was reduced to a drizzle and the staff worked tirelessly, to clear the excess stalled water and resume the game again.

Braving through the terrible weather, the players gave it their all and in the end, 3 points were sealed in our name.

In the last away match, Mohun Bagan drew 1-1 against FC Goa. It was a match the Green-and-Maroon should have won, just like the next match against Inter Kashi at home, which ended in a goalless draw for us, an unexpected result that put us on the backfoot of the title race.

Next up was the ISL Derby. East Bengal FC, the table toppers, were ahead on goal difference since they scored 7 goals against 10-men MDSC. The entire VYBK was filled with fans, one with the hope of winning and staying closer to the title race and the other hoping to be ahead by not losing to the Defending Champions.

Mohun Bagan started strong and launched a volley of lethal attacks. Manvir almost broke through after a defensive lapse from Anwar. The first half was positive for Mohun Bagan but no goals were scored by either side. In the second half, East Bengal increased pressing and attacked continuously while Mohun Bagan held their ground. Being a must-win game, Alberto and Tom was taken off to increase more attacking lethality on the pitch. The full-backs were tired which led to Edmund with fresh legs trouble Bose on the right wing. Miguel found him with a through pass in the box which he placed with a grounded shot towards the bottom left corner. EBFC led 1-0 at 84'.

The saying continues. Never count Mohun Bagan out - no matter the score, no matter the stakes. At 89', Dimi takes the corner and Cummings rises in front of the stack in the box, to flick it towards the 2nd post. The scores become level. 1-1 at VYBK, in the ISL Kolkata Derby.

In the 90+7 minute, Cummings slides in an amazing pass to find Maclaren in the box. The Aussie striker shoots it towards the 2nd post but Gill makes himself big enough to stop the ball from crossing the line. The match ends in 1-1 draw and the unbeaten streak in ISL derby continues for Mohun Bagan. But it came at a cost.

After 3 draws in a row, East Bengal was ahead on Goal Difference than 2nd placed Mohun Bagan with one match remaining for both teams. In the last game, Mohun Bagan faced SC Delhi. The opponents got the first lead with a calculated attack move that caught Mohun Bagan off-guard. Not far away from VYBK, EBFC faced Inter Kashi at KBK. Inter Kashi got the lead there too. The title race was not only open for the Mariners but it was also open for 3 other teams at that point. The game rolled down to all 90 minutes when Manvir scored a goal to bring Mohun Bagan back from the brink. In the dying minutes of the game, Liston's cross found Maclaren towards the 2nd post, and the Aussie found the gap to score! Mohun Bagan rejoiced the win but alas, on the other side of Kolkata, EBFC too made a comeback and won 2-1 against Inter Kashi. Mohun Bagan missed out on the ISL Shield, second only on goal difference to their arch rivals.
